South Middle School Joins the Project
Students in Mrs. Garcia-Omana’s and Mr. Clark's 6th Grade Enrichment Classes inquired into what “their home” (Newburgh) means to them. Students researched places in their neighborhood that had an impact on the society.
The class visited local sites including a Delano-Hitch Park art installation, entitled, “Truth Be Told: Uncovering Newburgh’s Muted Legacy”. The installation was created and unveiled by Newburgh Community Photo Project (NCPP), founded and directed by Vincent (Vince) Cianni.
Interesting Fact: Mrs. Wright Jumpp and Mrs. Garcia-Omana have been attempting to collaborate on a similar project since 2017. We never gave up even though we are no longer in the same school! We did it!
Student Tasks:
Choose a location
Visit the location, if possible
Conduct Research: Inquire into:
what it was in the past/what it was used for
who occupied the location
what it is now
the impact it had on the society
Create a Presentation: Students shared with classmates what “their Newburgh” meant to them both now, and what it must have meant back then.
