Newburgh Free Library and Horizons-on-the-Hudson IB World School
collaborate [for] grant-funded project, Newburgh: My Home
HOH School Library Media Specialist, Mrs. Jumpp, HOH Art Teacher, Ms. Heisler, and Children’s Librarian at NFL, Lisa Kochik, have worked together to involve students in a creative examination of Newburgh through the works of children’s book author and illustrator Ezra Jack Keats. Newburgh: My Home, a project funded by a mini-grant from the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation, examined the work of renowned, award-winning author/illustrator Keats, and invited children to visually represent a familiar place in the Newburgh community using collage techniques. HOH students were further exposed to Keats’ work by study and learning activities, including presentation of one of Keats’ works in skit form and creating collage art as set design. Collaborative events and activities included an author study, story times, poster project, parent workshop, art exhibit and more.
An Art Show Opening Reception and Keats’ Birthday Celebration was held at Newburgh Free Library’s Main Branch on Monday, March 11, 2013 and collage posters were exhibited in the library’s lobby thru March 22, 2013. A video of HOH students in the skit, Books Alive based on the book Whistle for Willie by Ezra Jack Keats was played and birthday cake was served. Collage posters will be made into digital posters and bookmarks and participants will receive copies. HOH and the NFL have formed a lasting partnership and the teachers and public librarian hope to embark upon another collaborative project next year. The collage posters are now off to the Newburgh City Hall where they will be on display.
