College & Career Readiness
The time to prepare for a college and/or career is now! Children who set goals early on in their lives are more likely to achieve their goals later on, even if they change. Many kids are interested in college, which is generally linked to higher earning potential. Students identified their interests and personality traits. During our College & Career Week, they attended a Career Fair where they learned about a variety of jobs and their qualifications. They also wrote out steps to achieve their career goals, many of which included attending a college or university. Students also learned about ways to prepare for college now: work hard in school even when it's tough, learn how to earn money, set up a savings account (my529), try new things, how to set goals, and READ READ READ!
Some predictors of college success are behavior skills, emotional regulation, persistence, attentiveness. These are all things the counseling program teaches students to develop. Participation in school-readiness screenings, having access to mental health resources, and preschool programming are also significantly related to future school success. Please reach out if you could use resources in any of these areas!
To practice at home:
Read with an adult.
Come up with two ways to earn money.
Set up a savings account together - check out my529.org.
Try something new and identify the feelings that come along with it!
Set a goal (school-related or otherwise) and break it down into steps.
If i do these things now…
