Unit 3 Learning Objectives - River Valley Civilizations:
These questions are the key points of the unit. You need to learn the answers to these questions and be able to explain them thoroughly before the test as these questions are the focus of the exam.
Invent An Alphabet:
Think of a word that starts with each sound in the English language (for example, apple could be for A). Write the word you chose. Then in Step 1 draw a detailed version of your word. In Step 2 simplify your picture into something that would be easier to draw. Then, in Step 3 simplify your picture further so it becomes your letter. See me for an example if you need one.
Monumental Tombs:
Egyptian pyramids were an example of Monumental Architecture. They were also tombs. Pharaohs would have their bodies buried there to await their resurrection in the afterlife. They also believed that things buried with them could go with them into the afterlife so they had treasures and other things they cared about buried with them.
Choose a famous person (they can be alive or dead, real or fictional) and design a monumental tomb for them that ties in somehow to what makes them famous and important (this concept is based on the concept of the pyramids of Egypt or the ziggurats of Mesopotamia). On the back draw five items that your person would want buried with them to take with them into the afterlife. Be sure to label everything and that it all is neat and in color.
EXAMPLE: For example, if I was designing a tomb for Elvis Presley I may design a giant tomb that was shaped like a guitar and that had a crown on top (because he was "The King") and his name in flashing Vegas-styled neon lights. Make your tomb represent and reflect on your person.
Then on the back of the page draw a casket or coffin and draw five things around it that your person may want to take with them into the afterlife (remember the Egyptians believed that things buried with you could go with you when you died). For Elvis I might draw his 1. Blue Suede Shoes 2. Hound Dog 3. Guitar 4. Gold Record 5. Peanut Butter & Banana Sandwich (his favorite food).
YOU CANNOT DO YOURS ON ELVIS PRESLEY

Hieroglyph Writing Assignment:
Write your full first and last name in Egyptian hieroglyphs
Then write me a message that is AT LEAST 12 words long in hieroglyphs.
Put the English translation of both your name and the message on the back of the paper.
Some other key things you should know:
These hieroglyphs represent sounds like letters not the picture they are of. For example, the picture of the vulture is the sound “A” not a vulture.
There is a letter for the “ch” sound, the “tch” sound, and “sh” sound.
The same symbol is used for u and w
There is no Egyptian letter for “o” or “x” so they will have to use a symbol for a sound that is somewhat close.
There is no “c” so they will have to use a “k” or “s” instead, depending on the sound they need.
