LOON, Bohol, Philippines (03/21/14)— Seventy families have begun moving into new earthquake- and typhoon-resistant houses being built in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Philippines and Union Bank. The bank’s donation of 10 million pesos — about US$222,000 — will fund not only new construction but also shelter repair kits that will allow 100 more families to begin rebuilding their lives. The core house design features a new bamboo-reinforced concrete technology that provides extra strength and flexibility during severe weather and natural disasters. Ultimately, Habitat Philippines aims to build 8,083 houses in 17 municipalities on the island of Bohol, funded by the national Department of Social Welfare and Development. ©Habitat for Humanity International/Jason Asteros
