"Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience"
CUREs, or Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences, allow students to participate in science, actively engaging with and learning the scientific practices involved in research. CUREs, although similar to inquiry-based lab models, have the benefit of potentially aiding faculty research outcomes alongside the student learning benefits (Shortlidge, et. al, 2015). These opportunities allow students to generate meaningful scientific knowledge (Corwin, et. al, 2017), and participate in scientific research that holds interest for the greater science community.
Bangera and Brownell (2014) contend that the implementation of CUREs can also increase participation and inclusion in STEM by introducing students to UREs (Undergraduate Research Experiences), potential future research opportunities, and the cultural norms of science.
