The MSE Department is pleased to provide over $65,000 in scholarships to MSE major students each academic year.
You must apply every year! The application typically opens at the beginning of December and the deadline is always February 15 for the following academic year.
Scholarships range from $500-$5,000 per year.
Most scholarships require a GPA of at least 3.0 in order to be eligible to apply.

Note: EFY students are not eligible for the MSE scholarships until after they join the MSE Department via the CODA process.
These scholarships are awarded in a campus-wide competition coordinated by the NC State Caldwell Programs and the Park Scholars Office. Many of these scholarships (i.e. the Park and Caldwell Fellow Scholarships) are typically highly competitive. The Park Scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen, while the Caldwell Fellow Scholarships are usually awarded to students who have completed one semester of studies at NC State.
Through its Scholarship Committee, the College of Engineering (COE) awards a number of scholarships each year to students in all engineering programs in the college. The selection criteria for these scholarships are established by the donors who provide the financial support for the scholarships. Many of these scholarships are targeted to recognize strong academic performance by minority or female engineering students. Other scholarships are provided for students with strong academic records and demonstrable financial need.
Financial need has typically been assessed by the scholarship committee based on information supplied by the NC State Financial Aid Office. In addition to scholarly excellence at NC State, examples of other criteria that are required by some donors in the selection of scholarship recipients include evidence of leadership skills and geographic location of the scholar's home.
To assist in the evaluation of a student's suitability as a recipient of a particular scholarship, the COE uses an online scholarship information form to be completed by the student in Pack Assist. The information in Pack Assist, along with overall academic records and financial aid information, is used in selecting the candidate who most closely matches the profile specified by the donor of a particular scholarship. The application is due on February 15 of each year and should be submitted every year in order for the student to be eligible for these scholarships.
Most COE-level scholarship selections are made in the late Spring, typically in late April or early May, and recipients are notified by mail shortly thereafter. A few scholarships will usually be available for award in the Fall semester, and the recipients are notified by mail.
Each year, the College of Engineering Scholarship Committee selects one outstanding rising senior from among all the engineering departments for the COE Faculty Senior Scholarship.
The candidate for this scholarship must be a rising senior with a projected graduation date in the upcoming academic year.
The selection criteria for this scholarship are: academic excellence, intellectual breadth, and depth of character
Applicants must be available to attend a virtual interview with the college-level scholarship committee at the end of March.
The student selected for this honor will receive a $10,000 scholarship awarded during the senior year (amount subject to adjustment depending on other scholarships held by the final awardee)
How to Apply to be the MSE Department Nominee:
STEP 1: Fill out and submit the general scholarship application in Pack Assist (you should do this anyway - it is the one-stop-shop for all COE scholarships and is required by current COE and/or MSE scholarship holders to be considered for scholarship renewal)
IMPORTANT: Do not fill out the Faculty Senior Scholarship "additional documentation" form even if it is listed under "Recommended Opportunities" after you submit your general application Pack Assist. Only the student selected as the MSE finalist will be asked to fill out the additional documentation form.
STEP 2: Fill out and submit the MSE Faculty Senior Scholar application form.
This form opens at the beginning of January and closes mid-February each year.
The Department offers a number of highly competitive scholarships which are reserved for materials science and engineering students. The selection criteria for these scholarships are similar to those for the COE scholarships (i.e. academic merit, financial need, minority status, female students, etc.) Most MSE scholarship decisions are made in the spring for the next academic year.
Most of the MSE scholarships are targeted by the donors for junior and senior-level students. In this regard, the MSE department offers no scholarships for incoming freshmen.
The information used to match students with scholarships includes academic records, financial aid information, and additional information on the COE scholarship information form. Forms are due February 15 and students must apply every year.
Ms. Hillary Stone coordinates the scholarship program in the Department, and students are encouraged to contact her if they have questions regarding the scholarship program.

Each year, the NC State Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) nominates 1–3 undergraduate students for the prestigious Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) Award.
ASF requires formal faculty nomination, but students do not need to be conducting research with MSE faculty to be considered. Internships, interdisciplinary research, independent projects, entrepreneurial work, industry or government research, and other substantial technical experiences outside the classroom are strongly encouraged.
Rising MSE juniors and seniors are encouraged to apply. Selected MSE nominees will be given time to prepare required materials—including identification of a faculty nominator and two faculty letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and a resume—for the college-level submission deadline (mid-February).
Applicants must:
Be a United States citizen (proof of birthright or naturalization required)
Be a high-performing academic student
Have conducted a significant amount of technical work outside the classroom, which may include laboratory research, cooperative education, internships, relevant military experience, entrepreneurial endeavors, and/or documented independent work resulting in technical papers, patents, or similar work products
Have completed two years of full-time study at an ASF-affiliated university
Be a full-time student during the academic year for which the scholarship is awarded
The ASF nomination process is highly competitive:
MSE nominates 1–3 students → College of Engineering selects 3 students → NC State selects up to 2 students for nomination to ASF
Recipients of the ASF Award may receive a scholarship of up to $15,000 per academic year.
MSE application opens: Mid-December
MSE application deadline: Mid-January
MSE nominees selected: Late January
College-level nomination materials due: Mid-February
In addition to the three sources of scholarships mentioned above, some materials science and engineering students will have scholarships from other sources. These sources include but are not limited to: grants and loans from the Financial Aid Office to qualified students, scholarships from other departments for students pursuing more than one degree (i.e. double majors), and scholarships from external sources (i.e. National Merit Scholarships, some companies offer scholarships to children of employees, etc.).
Because the Air Force needs a large number of engineers, the Air Force ROTC has a number of programs designed to help engineering students get through college, including the two types of scholarship programs. Over 70% of Air Force scholarships are awarded to engineering students. To learn more about the programs available at NC State, stop by Room 135E in Reynolds Coliseum or call the Air Force ROTC Unit Admissions Officer 515-2417.
Undergraduate students who participate in the NC State chapter of Material Advantage are eligible for scholarships through ASM. Learn more and join Material Advantage here.
