Making computers and machines think and act like humans to make our lives easier.
There are 3 types of AI-
Artificial Narrow Intelligence- Machines can perform a specific task ex. Netflix and Siri
Artificial General Intelligence- The machine can comprehend or pick up any intellectual skill that a human can ex. IBM Watson Super Computer
Artificial Super Intelligence- Machines surpass human intelligence. Think- what would the world be like if machines take over?
This article goes more in depth to what AI is and how we use it everyday.
Reduces time needed to complete certain tasks- even does some tasks for you
Increases productivity
AI is always available, unlike humans computers don't need to sleep, eat, or be watched!
Personalizable
Expensive
Must be digitally intelligent to operate an AI machine
AI could be taking jobs away from humans, increasing unemployment rates
AI is being used more and more in education. Let's look at how AI is benefiting education, potentially harming it, and the future of AI in our school.
Benefits
Can assist teachers in grading more efficiently
Educational software such as virtual reality or other game-like educational software can aid in individualized and engaging learning
Can track student progress by seeing which areas students struggle with. For example, after students take a test online AI can record which problems students struggled with the most. Also, immediate feedback can be given by the AI
AI tutors can assist students outside or class or while the teacher is unavailable.
Drawbacks
Many students are using AI recourses such as Chat GPT to cheat on assignments, and even have the AI machine write essays for them
Students may rely on AI and stop thinking for themselves.
AI may become so prevalent in schools that they start to replace teachers.
AI devices are often expensive, some schools may not be able to afford them. This would put many students at a disadvantage compared to students in other schools.
Here is more information on ChatGPT and how some schools have already blocked it
As a future teacher, I see AI coming in handy and making my job easier and less time-consuming! I would love to use AI to help grade papers and provide immediate feedback to me and my students. I am also an advocate for gamification in the classroom, using AI machines because they individualize learning and engage students. However, is AI going to take my job? AI is evolving so that students may learn anywhere any time using an AI as their teacher. While I do believe AI has a place in the classroom, I can't help but be skeptical to conform to a new AI world. As someone who has never been the biggest fan of technology or video games, I believe that we must teach students to love to learn on their own, with their peers, and with their teachers. I have no idea where the future of AI will go, but I sure know that it is coming and I am interested to see where it goes.
