Background

Justification for Program:

Popcorn and Pajamas is appropriate for Jaycee Community Center because it meets the desired outcome of bringing more people into the community center, and bringing more people from Mayview into the community center. The participants will enjoy themselves playing games and watching a movie, thus improving their reputation of the community center.

    • By providing an event so close to the Mayview community and with flyers posted in their neighborhood, awareness of the community center was brought to the community members
  • Build rapport between the community and the community center.
    • By providing a family event at the community center, it showed that JCC really cares about its community members and strives to build that relationship between the community center and the community.
  • Build stronger relationships between family members that attend the program.
    • By providing a family event at the community center, it shows that JCC care about the families that it serves, and wants to invest in their quality of life. It also shows that JCC wants to be an integral part of family bonding experiences.

Goals and Objectives:

Jaycee Community Center is attempting to bring together members of the Mayview Apartment Community. The Popcorn and Pajamas event is attempting to bring families together to enjoy games and a movie with their own families and other families in the community. By bringing families into the community center, we hope that they will have a positive experience and want to attend future events.

4. Create a friendly atmosphere through music and welcoming volunteers

3. Provide food offerings that build trust between center and family.

40 Developmental Assets:

Positive Family Communication- Provided activities that allow for family bonding between siblings and parents. Families were able to play games together, which allowed them to communicate and have fun.

Interpersonal Competence- The program facilitated interaction between participants to develop interpersonal skills. Participants were able to play games with other participants and interact with people they had never met. This continued to develop their interpersonal skills.

Positive View of Personal Future- Promoted NCSU at the event. We hoped that the children were inspired by students wanting to spend their Friday evening with them and the participants left with a positive view of NC State. We also had NC State t-shirts, sunglasses and other materials to pass out so everyone left with something that said NC State.
