My topic is too recent or is not scholarly

Sometimes, if your topic is too recent or "popular," it may be difficult to find scholarly research on it. The video below will walk you through overcoming the challenges of researching a non-scholarly or recent topic.

A couple of tips:

• Think about how your topic fits into a more general category, genre, or group
  • eg, Captain Marvel as part of the larger Marvel Universe
• Think about themes, concepts, or consequences that your topic involves. Do a separate search on those. You might be breaking new ground in making connections!
  • eg, examples of feminist lead characters in movies or examples of diverse representation in Hollywood
