Go to the website of a credible newspaper and browse the subsections of Science, Business, World Politics, etc. You'll find lots of examples of current topics that might interest you there. If someone is writing about it in the news, there's a good chance researchers are also writing about it!
The Libraries have a couple databases that are good places to look for background information on a topic and might also be a good place to spark some ideas for research topics.
