GETTING AHEAD AND STAYING AHEAD
Getting Ahead" and "Staying Ahead" are structured, multi-week programs designed to help individuals in poverty-stricken or unstable financial situations build resources, gain stability, and create future-oriented plans. These programs focus on personal investigation, skill-building, and mentorship to help participants transition from just getting by to long-term self-sufficiency.
Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin'-By World: A 15-20 week workshop, developed by Phil DeVol, where investigators assess their current resources (financial, emotional, social) and create a future story.
Key Themes: Topics include understanding hidden rules of class, addressing systemic issues like transportation/housing, building stability, and increasing income.
Staying Ahead: Mentorship and continued support for graduates, focusing on maintaining gains, building 11 specific resources, and providing long-term guidance.
Benefits: Participants receive stipends, meals, and childcare during sessions, which are described as supportive, safe spaces to plan for a better future.
