The mission of the Verne Duncan school counseling program is to provide a proactive, comprehensive, and developmentally appropriate program to address students’ academic and career goals in addition to supporting their personal and social needs. This is accomplished through a partnership with parents/guardians, Duncan staff and community members to enable all students to become successful, productive citizens and lifelong learners in a diverse and changing world.
The students at Verne Duncan Elementary School are healthy and responsible individuals that are excited to learn and grow together. As 21st century leaders, they are empowered to continue to be lifelong learners. All students at Duncan participate in a rigorous curriculum that encourages innovation, risk-taking, excitement for learning, and personal growth in a trusting partnership. The comprehensive school counseling program supports and fosters partnerships between students, staff, families, and community members in order to eliminate the achievement gap and equip all students to achieve their full potential. This vision is based on the following beliefs:
All students can learn and grow academically, socially, and emotionally.
All students have unique strengths.
We must work to actively engage children, families, and community members, and fully develop them as partners in the educational experience.
The school counseling program will promote the following: an understanding of and respect of self and others; problem-solving and decision-making; emotional-management skills; skills for learning; and the influence of academic habits on career success.
