Social Emotional Learning is an important part of any student's education. Whenever I can incorporate SEL into my ELA class, I do it! It can be something as small as just a check in with the students, or something a little more elaborate to have them focus on SEL skills. Below you will find some examples of SEL activities I have done with my middle school students.
This is a Pear Deck (modified from a template given by PD website) that I used every Monday Morning to check in with my students. This gives them an opportunity to get in touch directly with their teacher with any questions or things they want to talk about (get off their chest).
I also like to include an Edpuzzle for students to complete to learn something new about the world.
This is a Pear Deck I created for the beginning of the school year to get to know my students. This was also the first Pear Deck I created once I learned Canva was teaming up with Pear Deck to make designs for the Pear Deck Slides. I was still trying to learn about to save the Canva design as a google slides, so this might be a little difficult to copy and manipulate, but it is a good example to study and recreate.
This is a Pear Deck (modified from several templates given by PD website) that I used when students returned from Winter Break to start the New Year. Especially during these trying times, sometimes we just need to pause and have students get a chance to catch up and really check in with themselves.
This is a Pear Deck that I created and used for students to self-reflect mid way through the year (this can be used for end of the year as well). This gives the students a time to self reflect as well as critique my teaching styles and how it is helping and/or hurting their learning engagement. I tell students to be honest and respectful; If they don't tell me what they need or what is wrong, I would not have a chance to help them. I learned a lot of useful information from my students to better help them learn life skills for success. This is also a great chance for students to advocate for themselves.
This SEL activity was developed based on the Choose Love Curriculum. But this can definitely be used for anyone! Everyone's happy place looks different, and this is a chance for students to play around and design what their Happy Place would look like. (It brings me back to my SIMS house designing days). I found, from a teacher, an assembly of different room decor for students to browse and use. This was a really fun activity to complete: even the teachers had a blast!
This SEL activity was developed around winter break. Anyone who knows me, knows I love writing poetry, so whenever there is a chance to show students a new type of poem, especially one as easy as an acrostic poem, I will be doing tit! There is also an Edpuzzle about Winter Acrostic poems that works as a great engagement for this activity.
This SEL activity was developed based on a template created by another educator for students to analyze characters in a novel. I've used it with novels like Milkweed and The Outsiders. This template lends itself to be used for anything that has to do with characters or people. I used this particular one during a Choose Love activity about courage where students had to research a person (celebrity or personal) who they find courageous and create a profile for them. I enjoyed this one and now have more ideas of how to use this IG template.
This is my latest "Getting to know You" Pear Deck for Back to School with Students. I have added in some things I learned at this summer's Pear Deck Coach Summer Academy to make the Pear Decks even more engaging for students as you get to know them in September!
