The idea of a Golden Shovel Poem was first introduced to me during one of my fall Professional Development provided by my district and CoLabs. It lends itself for any novel that has the theme of Identity running through It. Below you will find all the resources I created for this project, which I paired with The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros.
This is the pre-writing activity I had students complete for the Golden Shovel Poem. We completed this project after we finished reading the novel The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros.
This is a Pear Deck I used for students to brainstorm and practice with analyzing phrases from the novel that I felt were significant to the overall theme and understanding of the novel.
This brainstorming Pear Deck has students revisiting their Identity wheel they completed during our unit with Mango Street and have students Interpret which parts of their Identity are more important to them.
The next part of the writing process is the drafting stage. Within this Google Doc, students have access to the various Mango Street phrases they viewed and interpreted in the brainstorming Pear Deck. They also have access to a screencastify video that I created to show the different steps of this project. They will then draft their Golden Shovel Poem to get ready for the next stage: Publishing.
For the publishing aspect of this project, students had the ability to use Canva, which is free for educators and students to use, to create their poem using a Canva design. Students were given examples created by myself.
