Using Question Randomization

Moodle Quiz allow you to setup an assessment that can randomly pull questions from a larger pool of question choices. This guide explains how to create grouped questions in a quiz that will be randomized for students. For more additional support resources on Quiz, please visit the Quiz overview page.

Note: This guide assumes that you have already added a Moodle Quiz to your course.

Adding Random Questions to a Quiz

With questions placed in a single category, questions can be setup to pull random choices from the category.

Step 1: Click on the Quiz title in the course.

Step 2: Once viewing the Quiz , click the Questions to Edit Quiz.

Step 3: Click on the Add link within the question list and then select a random question from the drop-down menu.

Step 4: Click the Category field and select the category that contains your random question group.

Step 5: Click the Number of random questions field and select the number of questions that you want to add (if greater than 1!).

Step 6: Click Add random question when finished.

The random questions will appear in the Edit Quiz screen. Add additional random questions by repeating the process or add standard questions as necessary.

Adding Questions to a Category for Randomization

In order to use this feature for assessment, questions need to be first grouped together in a question category within the course.

Tip: If the questions already exist in your course, you can always move them into a category for randomization.

Step 1: Click on the quiz title.

Step 2: Once viewing the Quiz , click the Question Bank.

Step 3 : Under Question tab, click Create a new question.

Step 4: In the pop-up menu, click question type and click Add.

Note: This feature can be used with all question types!

Step 5: In the Question builder, click on the Category field and select the category name found under the Quiz context. All questions in the random grouping should be placed in the same question category!

Step 6: Create the question by entered the required fields for the selected question type.

Step 7: Scroll to the bottom and click Save Changes when finished building the question.

The new question will appear under the appropriate category in the question bank

Repeat Steps 3-7 as necessary until you have created all your Quiz questions.
