Assessment questions that require written responses should be created using the Essay question format. This text entry question type can be used for short or longer responses and must be reviewed manually by the instructor.
TIP: You may notice that Moodle also includes a Short Answer question format that is auto graded by the system. This question type can be very challenging to set up because it requires the instructor to anticipate all possible response variations ahead of time. This often results in submissions being incorrectly scored and is why we recommend using the Essay format for all written questions.

Step 1: Click on the Quiz title in the course.
Step 2: Once viewing the Quiz , click the Gear icon and select Edit Quiz.
Step 3: Select the location for the question by clicking the desired Add link and then select + a new question from the drop-down menu.
Step 4: In the pop-up menu, click Essay and click Add.
Step 5: Enter a specific name in the Question name field.
Note: Question names are not seen by students but will help identify questions in your question bank. A clear question name relating to the topic or content will be helpful for reusing questions in the future.
Step 6: Enter the question or prompt in the Question Text field.
Step 7: If desired, enter a new number in the Point value field. The default value for a question is one point.
Step 8: Under Response Options, click the Input box size field and adjust the number of lines for the response.
Note: Adjusting this field does not limit their response to a certain length, it simply determines the size of the box that initially displays for the response.

Step 9: Click Save changes when finished.
Step 10: The question will appear on the edit quiz screen, click the magnifying glass to preview the question.
