The Essay question type requires a manual review by the instructor prior to the final grade being calculated the quiz. This guide outlines two options for manually scoring essay question submissions in Moodle Quiz.
Faculty can view and score all student responses for a single question using the manual grading feature. This is the most efficient process for scoring student essay questions in Moodle Quiz.
Step 1: Click on the Quiz title in the course on Edit mode and then click on Results in the menu.
Step 2: Once viewing the Quiz , click on Grades the dropdown menu and select Manual grading.
Step 3: To manually grade responses for a question, click the grade all or grade link as appropriate.
The grading attempts screen will display every student response for the selected question. Scroll down to review each question response.
Step 4: If desired, enter question level feedback text in the Comment field.
Note: In order for students to see your comments, students must be allowed to see both their Attempt and Specific feedback as set in the Quiz Review Options settings. See step 13 of the Quiz setup guide for the location of these settings.
Step 5: Enter your assigned score in the Points field.
Tip: You can enter partial credit in the Points field ( .5, .75, etc.).
Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each student response as appropriate.
Step 6: Scroll down and click Save and show next when finished.
Once finished, you will return to the grading screen. Grading information will now be updated based on your saved scores for each question.
Click Update grades to change scoring for a question or repeat Steps 3-6 to score next question number in the list.
Faculty can manually score individual question responses through the grader report. This is only recommended when a small number of responses need manual scoring. For bulk manual grading, follow the process outlined under option 1 of this resource.

Step 4: A pop-up window will appear with the student response for the selected question, click Make comment or override points.
A second pop-up window will appear with comment and points fields.
Step 5: If desired, enter question level feedback text in the Comment field.
Note: In order for students to see your comments, students must be allowed to see both their Attempt and Specific feedback as set in the Quiz Review Options settings. See step 13 of the Quiz setup guide for the location of these settings.
Step 6: Enter your assigned score in the Points field.
Tip: You can enter partial credit in the Points field ( .5, .75, etc.).
