Creating Groups in a Course

Moodle allows you to place students in groups within your course. Once groups are created, you have the ability to enable various forms of group functionality for activities and resources within a course.  You can also create multiple sets of groups using the groupings feature.

Once groups have been created in your course, you can then

Step 1:  Within the course page header, click Participants

Step 2: From the Participants screen select Groups from the drop-down menu.

Step 3:  Once on the Groups screen, click Create group

Step 4:  Enter a Group name in the text field. 

Enter other optional information as desired…

Step 5:  Click Save Changes when finished. 

Repeat steps 3-5 to create additional groups in the course. 

Step 6:  To add students to a group, select the group title within the Groups field and click Add/remove users. 

Step 7:  Under Potential members, click the name of the users (s) you wish to add to the group.

Tip: Hold the Ctrl key to select multiple members as once.

Step 8: Click the Add button to move users into the group member field. 

Step 9:  When all members are added to the group, click the Back to groups button. 

Once students are added to group, the member list will display in the Members of field

Repeat steps 6-9 to update membership for additional groups. 

With groups created, you can create different sets of groups in your course using the Groupings tab
