Creating Assignment Drop-Boxes

An assignment activity creates an electronic drop box, automatically linked to your grade book, where students can submit assignments as a Word or a PDF document.

Note: This guide provides an overview of the steps needed to create a basic Assignment drop-box in your course. The Assignment tool also offers a number of additional settings that can be used to customize the drop-box.  You can explore a detailed explanation of all Moodle Assignment settings using this resource.

Step 1: Click the switch to turn editing mode on.

Step 2: Locate the topic section (or week) in which the content will be located and click +Add an activity or resource.

Step 3: In the pop-up menu, select Assignment.

Step 4: 

a. Enter a title in the Assignment name field. 

b. If desired, enter text in the Description field.  Including instructions in this field can provide helpful guidance for students.

c. Click the check box if you wish the description to display on the front of the course. If left unchecked, the description will display after they click on the Assignment. 

The Assignment feature allows you to upload a file relating to the assignment. This is optional but can be helpful for providing detailed instructions, materials, or grading expectations to students.

Step 5: e. To add a supporting file to the assignment

Option 1: Click the file upload icon and then select the file from your computer 

Option 2: Drag and drop a file from your computer into the file upload field.

Step 6: 

f.  Click on the Availability heading to expand the assignment date options. 

g.To open the assignment on a specific date, enter the appropriate dates in the Allow submission form fields.  

h.To set the due dates, enter the appropriate dates in the Due date fields. Note: By default, students are able to submit assignments after the due date.

i. If you wish to restrict student submissions after a certain date, click the Enable check box and then enter the appropriate dates in the Cut-off date fields. 

j.  If you wish to have grading reminders displayed in the Course Overview block of your Dashboard, click the Enable check box and then enter the appropriate dates in the Remind me to grade by fields.

Step 7: 

k. Click on the Grade heading to expand the grade options.

l. If desired adjust the Type, Scale, and Maximum grade settings for the assignment. 

m. If desired, click the Grade category menu to add the assignment to an existing category in your Gradebook. 

Step 8:  Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Save and return to course when finished.
