The Navy Junior Reserve Officer training corp program, was established by Public Law in 1964 which may be found in Title 10, U.S. Code, Chapter 102. The program is conducted at accredited secondary schools throughout the nation and taught by instructors who are retired Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officers and enlisted personnel. The NJROTC accredited curriculum emphasizes citizenship and leadership development, as well as our maritime heritage, the significance of sea power, and naval topics such as the fundamentals of naval operations, seamanship, navigation and meteorology. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by extra-curricular activities of community service, academic, athletic, drill and orienteering competitions, field meets, flights, visits to naval or other activities, marksmanship sports training, and physical fitness training. Electronic classroom equipment, textbooks, uniforms, educational training aids, and limited travel expenses are provided by the Navy.

The Navy JROTC program at Smithfield Selma High School presents an outstanding opportunity for all students. In just your first year, you can earn essential community service credits while quickly forging new friendships. This program is ideal for those seeking personal growth, determination, confidence, and leadership skills, that we will teach both in and out of school, because we are committed to pushing you beyond your perceived limits.
If you're interested in expanding your horizons this school year, consider joining one or more of the eight teams in our program, including Academic Brain Brawls, Navigational Races, Fitness, shooting competitions, and more. All coached by your fellow cadets, and someday, you might even have the opportunity to coach and train them as well.
With over ten leadership roles available in our program, you could find yourself assisting fellow enlisted cadets, commanding drone competitions, or managing media content. There's a role tailored to fit your skills and interests—all we ask for is your commitment and courage.
Your efforts in our program won't go unnoticed or unappreciated. Our student staff is the backbone of our program, and our enlisted cadets are essential for us to continue. Your participation, dedication, and efforts will be recognized and rewarded with more than just a gold star sticker. In our unit, your contributions will be showcased with medals and ribbons proudly worn on your chest, symbolizing your valuable role within our unit.
Even if you're not interested in joining teams or events, being in NJROTC can still benefit you after graduation. We offer support with scholarships, job applications, ASVAB practice testing, and the opportunity to advance three ranks and pay grades if you choose to join the military.
NJROTC IS NOT a recruiting program. Students who participate in NJROTC are not required to join the military after high school, and the program is not a military preparation class.
