A variety of teaching strategies will be used in this course. These include Reading, lectures, note-taking, oral presentations by students, independent research, computer and internet activities, guest speakers, physical training, cooperative learning, case studies, discussions, and project work.
VI. Grading Policies:
Grade Distribution:
The following criteria and weights will be used to calculate your grade.
20%-Academics- To include; Tests, quizzes, reports, homework, and other graded assignments.
Cadets are required to take notes on presented information and the notes are gradable.
40%-Uniform inspections and drill- Weekly grade to include effort/performance in weekly drill and mandatory uniform inspections.
It is important to note that because NJROTC uses weekly uniform inspections to emphasize and illustrate the importance of life skills being taught (ie. attention to detail, self-discipline, accountability, etc.), the weekly uniform inspection grade is critical to the success of the cadet in this course.
Any time a cadet is in uniform he/she is representing the school, the NJROTC program, and ultimately the Navy. Uniform wear is required for the ENTIRE school day and compliance to uniform standards and grooming standards (haircut/style, shave, fingernails, authorized jewelry, etc…) are strictly enforced.
40%-Participation and bearing - Based on the following criteria: 1.Being on time for class, 2. Being prepared for class, 3. Overall participation in class, and 4. Behavior and respect toward others. It is important to note that the life skills being taught to our cadets apply outside the NJROTC classroom as well. Therefore, participation and bearing in other non-NJROTC-related classes and events will also be reflected in the cadet's NJROTC participation and bearing grade.
Extra Credit - Will be considered by the instructor based on overall performance, participation, and service to the unit.
Extra credit can/will be assigned to cadets supporting after-school events including practices, competitions, community service, school service, etc.
Area Manager Inspection (AMI) - The AMI is an annual event and is Mandatory. All Cadets are required to be prepared
and in attendance on the scheduled time and day. This grade counts for five PI grades and can not be made up if missed. This is a school and
district-graded event and is extremely important to the program here at Riverside High School. Every attempt to participate in the AMI must be made
and only bonified and verified emergencies will be excused. If a student is absent from the AMI, failure for the quarter is certain.
School District letter and numerical grade equivalents:
100-90 A
89-80 B
79-70 C
69-60 D
59- and under F
VII. Major Projects/Assignments:
Major assignments and projects will be incorporated into the class each quarter as determined by the Senior Naval Science Instructor (SNSI), or Naval Science Instructors (NSI).
VIII. Types of Weekly Assignments Used:
Assignments may include classroom projects, skills assessments, problem-solving, life skills assessments, uniform inspections, aptitude evaluations, and classroom activities. Each Cadet will be given a daily participation grade which is comprised of the following four inputs: being on time to class, being prepared for class, participating in class, and behavior. Each cadet will also have a weekly Personal Inspection (PI) which includes the proper wearing of the uniform and military knowledge questions.
IX. Materials/Supplies/Textbook Provided by Teacher:

REQUIRED APPAREL FOR ALL CADETS
- Unit PT Shirt (Lime Green)
- Unit Polo Shirt (Blue)
- Unit Shorts (Blue)
These items enable the unit to function as a unit and look professional on trips.
X. Materials/Supplies Required by Student:
Notebook for note-taking.
Pencils and pen
Plain white, crew neck t-shirt one size smaller than their size (worn with uniform).
Black dress socks (worn with the uniform, not footies.)
Materials to clean and shine shoes and insignia.
XI. Homework Procedures/Policies:
Homework is an integral part of the learning process. If assigned, it is given to help the cadet prepare for upcoming lessons, reinforce work done in class, and allow the cadets to practice skills learned. All homework assignments will be graded and must be completed on time. Late homework will not be accepted for grading purposes. Most homework will be in the form of pre-reading for upcoming lessons or studying notes taken in class for upcoming quizzes/ tests. It is important to note that traditionally academic homework will be reasonably light. This is due to the fact that NJROTC uses the weekly uniform inspection and military drill precision to emphasize and illustrate the importance of life skills being taught (ie. attention to detail, self-discipline, accountability, etc.) Therefore, the main homework focus will be uniform inspection and military drill preparation. The weekly uniform inspection grade is critical to the success of the cadet in this course. If a cadet does not wear the uniform consistently they will not be successful in this course.
XII. Performance Remediation, Make-up Procedures/Policies:
Performance: Many minor substandard performance and behavior issues will be handled in class and documented in the cadet’s record. However,
if substandard performance or inappropriate behavior continues, Extra Military Instruction (EMI) may be assigned. EMI is designed to help a
cadet recover from a performance deficiency or a missed uniform inspection. EMI will be conducted after school on drill days Monday, Tuesday, or
Wednesday. Failure to complete EMI, or continued substandard performance and/or behavior issues after completion of EMI, will result in escalated
disciplinary action to include parent-teacher conferences, referrals, and ultimately removal of the unit.
Make-up work: It is the responsibility of the student to obtain missed assignments and complete them. Students will normally be given five days to make-up work (including taking exams) for an absence.
Missed uniform inspections, due to absences, can be made up for full credit on the next day the student is in class. If a student fails to wear his/her uniform on the next day they are present in the class, they can make up the inspection the following day in class at a maximum grade of 75. If the student misses this second makeup opportunity, they can attend EMI and will receive a grade of 70.
If a cadet is present but fails to wear their uniform on inspection day, or they do not wear their uniform the entire school day, they will receive a zero until the inspection is made up. The inspection must be made up the next day they are present in the class and the maximum grade possible is a 75. If the student misses this make-up opportunity, they can attend EMI and will receive a grade of 70.
XIII. Class Rules/Procedures/Policies
All class rules, procedures, and policies will be explained to cadets and
must be adhered to and are considered a part of their participation grade.
