CWO3 Baldwin enlisted in the US Navy while in high school and then attended Basic Training in Orlando Florida in January 1980. Upon completion of Basic Training he completed Basic Electricity and Electronics School and Interior Communication Technician “A” School in San Diego, California. He then completed Basic Submarine School and Interior Communication Technician Submarine IC Package in Groton, Connecticut. He continued to build on his initial training throughout his career adding many advanced technical and leadership skills.
Then IC3 Baldwin’s first duty station was aboard the USS Grayling (SSN-646), a fast attack submarine home ported in Charleston South Carolina. While aboard the USS Grayling, he completed two deployments in the Mediterranean Sea and two deployments in the North Atlantic. During this tour of duty he also advanced to Interior Communication Technician First Class, earned his submarine designator as (SS), served as IC Division Leading Petty Officer, and qualified all required watch stations.
His next assignment was as Maintenance Department Leading Petty Officer at Fleet and Mine Warfare Training Center Charleston South Carolina. While assigned he was responsible for basic maintenance of building and the grounds of Fleet and Mine Warfare Training Center.
In March 1988, IC1 (SS) Baldwin reported to the USS Birmingham (SSN-695), home ported in Pearl Harbor Hawaii. The USS Birmingham completed a major overhaul in the shipyard, conducted a shakedown cruise, sound trails, and a West Pack deployment. While attached, he served as the ships 3M Coordinator, Interior Communication Division Chief, qualified all watch stations up to Diving Officer of the Watch. IC1 (SS) Baldwin was then promoted to ICC (SS) and initiated into the ranks of Chief Petty Officer in Subic Bay, Philippines in April 1990.
He then received orders to the USS Orion (AS-18), a Submarine Repair Tender forward deployed in La Maddalena Italy, as the Interior Communication Division CPO. During this tour, he held positions of Assistant Department Head of the R-3 Division, R-3 Department Head, Ship Supervisor, and he earned his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist designation (SW).
Upon decommissioning the USS Orion, he then transferred to Naval Submarine School, Groton Connecticut for Instructor Duty. While assigned he held positions as an Interior Communication Division Instructor, Submarine Ship Control Trainer Division Officer, Submarine Ship Control Trainer Department Head, and the Lead Instructor for all Ship Control Department Courses. During this tour, ICC (SS/SW) Baldwin, qualified as a Master Training Specialist, earned the title of Naval Submarine School Groton Connecticut Instructor of the Year 1994, completed his Bachelor of Science Degree in Liberal Arts from The University of the State of New York, and was selected as a Chief Warrant Officer in the Submarine Engineering designator.
Chief Baldwin was commissioned as, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Baldwin on March 3, 1997. After commissioning, CWO2 Baldwin took his first assignment as a Naval Officer in Agana Guam as the Boilers Officer aboard the USS Frank Cable (AS-40). The USS Frank Cable conducted submarine and ship repairs in Japan, Egypt, Australia, and at sea. During his tour, CWO2 Baldwin qualified and stood watch to include the Engineering Officer of the Watch (EOOW), Officer of the Deck (OOD), and Surface Warfare Officer (SWO).
CWO2 Baldwin was then assigned, what would turn out to be his last tour on active duty, as an Officer Recruiter at Naval Recruiting District Jacksonville in Florida in September 1999. During his tour at NRD Jacksonville, the district was consistently in the top 5 districts nationally. He earned the title of, Region Engineering Recruiter of the Year from 2000 to 2002. He was the United States Navy National Recruiter of the Year for 2001 and 2002. He also served as the Officer Programs Officer (OPO,) for the year 2002 while actively recruiting. His performance as OPO earned him the title of Region OPO of the Year 2002. CWO2 Baldwin was promoted to Chief Warrant Officer three (CWO3) in 2001, he earned more than 25 Gold Wreaths for recruiting and was invited to teach recruiting naval officers how to recruit at navy recruiting headquarters in Millington, Tennessee. However, CWO3 Baldwin retired from active duty on October 1, 2003, with 23 years of naval service.
Chief Warrant Officer Baldwin’s awards include The Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (Three Gold Stars), Navy Achievement Medal (Four Gold Stars), and various other personal citations and unit citations/ awards.
After retiring from naval service, Chief Warrant Officer Baldwin served as the Operations Manager with Atlantic Home Technology, performed as the Vice President of Murtaugh Companies, and did Program Management work for WW Gay Facility Automation.
Chief Warrant Officer Baldwin is currently teaching Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) to the awesome Cadets at Riverside High School in Jacksonville Florida. He resides in Jacksonville Florida with his lovely wife of over forty-three years.
