In many circumstances many students who are avid orienteers do not know much about the governing bodies for the Sport of Orienteering. If you are reading this you are most likely a student who has run an orienteering event put on by a local Florida orienteering club such as Florida Orienteering (FLO) or Suncoast Orienteering Adventure Racing (SOAR).
Both clubs FLO and SOAR are members of the United States Orienteering Federation (USOF) also known as Orienteering USA (OUSA). OUSA is a member of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF), which is the governing body for the sport of orienteering throughout the world.
The IOF provides all the regulations that pertain to the rules and regulations for the sport of orienteering to all of the different countries around the world. These rules not only include the rules and regulations for running an event but they also provide all the rules and regulations for orienteering maps. These regulations are so involved that even the widths of lines and colors on the maps have strict requirements. The IOF also regulates the world competition events, one of which is the Junior World Orienteering Competition (JWOC).
Possibly one student reading this, may one day end up on the OUSA Junior National Team, representing the United States at the JWOC world competition.
