Co-Chairs

Francesca Grixoni

Francesca Grixoni is currently pursuing her Ph.D. degree in Applied Linguistics at NAU. She holds a BA in Linguistic and Cultural Mediation from University of Bologna and an MA in Interpreting and Translation from University of International Studies in Rome. Currently, she teaches Italian classes at NAU. Her research interests include speech perception, corpus linguistics, and forensic linguistics.



Taehyeong Kim

Taehyeong Kim is a Ph.D. student in Applied Linguistics at Northern Arizona University. He received his M.A. degree in English Language Education from Seoul National University. His research interests include corpus linguistics in relation to second language acquisition, linguistic complexity, register variation, and research methodology. 

Shujing Zhao

Shujing Zhao is a Ph.D. student in Applied Linguistics at Northern Arizona University. She received her master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania in TESOL. Her research interests include instructed second language acquisition, individual differences, and task-based language teaching.

 


Committee Members

Yuna Bae

Yuna Bae is a Ph.D. student in Applied Linguistics at Northern Arizona University. She holds an MA in English Language Education from Seoul National University. Her research interests include L2 speech perception and production, L2 prosody, speech technology, and L2 pronunciation.

Mary Bary

Mary Akbary is a Ph.D. student in Applied Linguistics at Northern Arizona University. Her research includes both methodological and substantive work, with a focus on Corpus Linguistics, Legal Linguistics, and Second Language Acquisition. She also serves as the editorial assistant for the Language Learning journal.

Nur Yağmur Demir

Nur Yağmur Demir is a third-year Ph.D. student at NAU. She has several years of experience in teaching English and Turkish in EFL contexts. She currently works as a composition instructor at NAU. Her research interests include corpus linguistics, register, AI-generated texts, computer-mediated communication and English as Lingua Franca. 

Dilara Dikilitas

Dilara joined NAU’s Applied Linguistics program in 2023. Her research interests include methods in teaching speaking to EFL learners, linguistic discrimination and issues of inequity, particularly in spoken modality. She holds an M.A. in Applied Linguistics-TESL from NAU and B.A. in TEFL from METU. Currently, she teaches composition classes and serves as a team leader for the university writing center tutors. 

Daria Guseva

Daria is pursuing an MA in TESL and Applied Linguistics at NAU. She is passionate about promoting second language research. As a member of the PR and Communication team, she is eager to contribute to the advancement of L2 research by managing social media outreach for SLRF 2025 and ensuring widespread engagement and communication within the SLRF community.



Yuhang Hu

Yuhang received her Ph.D in Applied Linguistics at Northern Arizona University in 2024. Her research interests include study quality, research synthesis, meta-analysis, and individual difference factors in second language research. 

Kelly Kendro

Kelly Kendro is a Ph.D. student in Applied Linguistics at Northern Arizona University. She holds an MA in Linguistics from University of Utah and a BA in Cognitive Science and Romance Languages from University of Michigan. Her related research investigates multilingualism and cognition, particularly in L2 acquisition and attrition contexts. 

Kim Nguyen

Kim Nguyen is a Ph.D. student in Applied Linguistics at Northern Arizona University. She previously attended graduate school at the University of San Diego and Teachers College, Columbia. Her research interests include SLA and language pedagogy, LESLLA learners, and the language learning experience of refugees and migrants.

Michelle Richter

Michelle is a Ph.D. student in Applied Linguistics with research interests in Speech perception, AI applications in language learning, and African American English. She is driven by creativity and passion, fueling her pursuit of advanced scholarship and innovative research in her field.

Faculty Advisors

Bill Crawford

Bill Crawford is a Professor in Applied Linguistics and the Academic Director of the Program in Intensive English at Northern Arizona University.  He is also the Vice President of the Learner Corpus Association. His main research focus relates to the description of second language performance (both spoken and written) and its application to second language acquisition and teaching. His work is related to various areas of applied linguistic research including Corpus linguistics, L2 writing, Task-Based Language Teaching, Teacher Development, and Pedagogical Grammar. His books include Doing corpus linguistics (w/Eniko Csomay; 2023, Routledge); Multiple perspectives on learner interaction: The corpus of collaborative oral tasks(2021, Mouton DeGruyter), and Teaching Grammar (2020, TESOL Press). 

Scott Jarvis

Scott Jarvis is the Stoller-Grabe Endowed Distinguished Professor of Applied Linguistics and TESL at Northern Arizona University. He is also currently serving as Editor-in-Chief of Language Learning and Treasurer of the American Association for Applied Linguistics. His main areas of research are crosslinguistic influence, lexical diversity, and forensic linguistics. His recent research has inter alia investigated conceptual transfer, comprehension and comprehensibility of legal language, and the modeling and measurement of lexical diversity.



Luke Plonsky

Luke Plonsky (PhD, Michigan State) is Professor of Applied Linguistics at Northern Arizona University, where he teaches courses in second language acquisition and research methods. His work in these and other areas has resulted in over 100 articles, book chapters, and books. Luke is Editor of Studies in Second Language Acquisition and Managing Editor of Foreign Language Annals. Among other service roles, he was also co-chair of SLRF 2009. In addition to a current appointment as Honorary Professor at the International Education Institute at University of St. Andrews, Luke has held faculty appointments at Georgetown University and University College London, and was a Fulbright Scholar in Spain in 2021. Luke has also lectured in China, Japan, The Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Puerto Rico.
