Social Studies

Social Studies includes the study of History, Geography, Civics, and Economics. Many curriculums focus on a single subject area, while others include multiple topics. Your adviser can help you select the curriculum that is the best fit for you and your child.

Social Studies Weekly: Studies Weekly standards-based curriculum applies a balanced literacy approach to education. The combination of printed weekly units and web-based primary source media, audio reader and other features creates a high level of student engagement. Teacher-created lesson plans include rigorous and relevant assessment, word study, writing prompts, reading (modeled, shared, guided, and independent) and much more. Grades K-8.

Mission US: Online simulations based on American History. Current Missions include: Revolutionary War, Slavery in the States, The Cheyenne, American Immigration, and the Dust Bowl. Grades 5-8.

History Quest: Each unit takes a chapter of History Quest the narrative history series, and turns it into a robust unit study with a week’s worth of engaging activities. Your student will gain a broad and deep understanding of Early or Medieval civilizations through readings, geography activities, discussions, writing assignments, coloring pages, crafts, and more. The History Quest Study Guide is your child’s first step in a lifelong quest to explore and appreciate history. Curiosity Chronicles: written as a back-and-forth dialogue between two main characters, this curriculum presents alternative views and competing historical facts. It allows students to discuss the role of often underrepresented people who are ignored by narrative-heavy history and to break down complex ideas piece by piece. This not only makes complex ideas accessible but it also models for students how to discuss complex ideas. Students will learn not only what happened in history but also why those events happened. Students will learn the building blocks of human societies and how one change often leads to another. They will analyze events and apply those skills to new situations. The activity guides include map work, timelines, supplemental reading, art projects, science projects, research projects, recipes, Minecraft building prompts, review activities, and more to ensure your student will be able to expand and build upon their learning in a meaningful way.

For Kids: introduces children to people, events, and ideas that have changed the world; the books in the For Kids series are written in a straightforward and accessible manner. They feature hands-on activities that extend the learning with interdisciplinary activities featuring writing, art, math, and science. Designed and illustrated with photographs and line drawings throughout, each book in the series includes interesting sidebars on the people and ideas that influenced the subject and their contemporaries in the field. History Odyssey: brings to life the story of mankind through a comprehensive study of the literature, historical events, and geography of the time period. Each study guide is intended to lead the instructor and student through a year-long study of the Ancients, the Middle Ages, Early Modern, Modern Times, or American History. They provide the framework and structure for using and organizing many of the best resources available for history and literature. Grades 1-8.

Story of Science: Copublished by Smithsonian Books and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), The Story of Science combines stories with coordinated "hands on" experiments and activities. The Story of Science begins with Thales, way back in ancient Greece, sojourns with Galileo, Kepler and Newton, take on Faraday, Maxwell and the electromagnetic revolution, then Einstein, Bohr, Feynman and the moderns.
