Mathematics

Mathematics is the abstract science of number, quantity, and space. Mathematics may be studied in its own right ( pure mathematics ), or as it is applied to other disciplines such as physics and engineering ( applied mathematics ). Your adviser can help you select the curriculum that is the best fit for you and your child.

Math Mammoth (Light Blue Series): Each grade level in the curriculum consists of two student worktexts (A and B), and supportive materials, which include answer keys, tests, and additional cumulative reviews. There are also links provided to online games and resources for each chapter. The program is mastery oriented: it concentrates fairly long on one topic, with fairly few topics per grade. It also focuses on conceptual understanding; uses lots of visual models and exercises based on those; emphasizes mental math and developing number sense; and is nearly self-teaching since the explanations of concepts are found in the student worktext. This curriculum requires fairly little preparation time from the teacher. Placement Test can be found here; a comparison of Math Mammoth to other homeschool curriculum programs. Grades 1-7.

Math in Focus (Singapore): an authentic Singapore Math® curriculum—with problem solving as the center of math learning and concepts taught with a concrete–pictorial–abstract learning progression through real-world, hands-on experiences. There are guided practice problems embedded in each lesson as well as a  practice set at the end of each lesson. Grades K-8.

Primary Mathematics Standards Edition (Singapore): Singapore Math series features the Concrete- Pictorial- Abstract approach. Students begin by learning through concrete and pictorial means before moving into abstract thought and development, which encourages active thinking process, communication of mathematical ideas and problem solving.  This program is recommended for those who want a solid, basic math program with a proven track record and an emphasis on concept development, mental techniques, and problem solving. Standard Edition books differ in that they include units on probability and data analysis, as well as negative numbers and coordinate graphs. The non-consumable textbooks are meant to be completed with adult supervision and teaching. Featuring the learning tasks, practice and review problems, the consumable workbooks are designed to be used alongside the textbooks for necessary practice. Grades K-5.

Beast Academy: Challenging math for talented math students. Made by Art of Problem Solving, this curriculum is designed to increase student’s ability to explain the “why” of math. The guide books are in full color and in the style of a graphic novel. Student must pass a placement test before curriculum will be ordered. View samples and placement test. Grades 2-5.

Art of Problem Solving: Advanced math for talented math students, this program is very text heavy, focusing on problem-solving, contest math and the deep rigor that goes into the “why” of mathematics. Comes with free online videos, online math practice program (Alcumus) and teaching guide. Students must pass placement test before curriculum will be ordered. View samples and placement test. Grades 6-8.

MCP Mathematics: This trusted, targeted program uses a traditional drill and practice format with a predictable, easy-to-use lesson format. MCP Math is flexible and adaptable to fit a variety of intervention settings including after school, summer school, and additional math instruction during the regular school day. By teaching with MCP Math, you can provide targeted intervention through a complete alternative program to core math textbooks, help students learn and retain new concepts and skills with extensive practice, and prepare students at a wide range of ability levels for success on standardized tests of math proficiency. Grades K-6

Math U See: The goal is to help produce confident problem solvers who enjoy the study of math. The reason we study math is so we can apply what we learn in everyday situations. The students learn their math facts, rules, and formulas, and are able to use this knowledge in real life applications. The study of math is much more than committing a list of facts to memory. It includes memorization, but it also encompasses learning the concepts that are critical to problem solving.  Great  for students who need a multi-sensory approach. LevelsPrimer - Have fun introducing math; Alpha - Single-digit addition and subtraction and other topics; Beta - Multiple-digit addition and subtraction and other topics; Gamma - Single and multiple-digit multiplication and other topics; Delta - Single and multiple-digit division and other topics; Epsilon - Fractions and other topics; Zeta - Decimals, percents and other topics; PreAlgebra - Negative numbers, order of operations, solving for the unknown, and other topics; Algebra 1 - Graphing, simultaneous equations, exponents, polynomials, unit multipliers, and more. Grades K-8.

Khan Academy: Online personalized math instruction. Students watch instructional videos to learn concepts and complete practice problems online. Ask your adviser to help you set up an account! Grades K-8.

CK-12: online textbook that allows students to choose a learning path and work at their own pace through a variety of math topics. Grades K-8.

Math Practice Resources: These resources do not include instruction, but provide opportunities for students to practice specific math skills.
