Who Wants a Snack Every Morning?

Beginning Monday, December 5, all students will be served a snack in their classrooms during third hour.

Yes, you read that right. Why? We know you all are hungry, and your bodies and brain need a little jump start mid-morning. A group of teachers and administrators worked to plan this opportunity for students because they know many of us are skipping breakfast for that extra 10 minutes of sleep each morning. NCHS Staff also knows that people who regularly eat are both more active and ready to learn. So get ready for some mid-morning snacks to feed your minds.

NCHS THANKSGIVING FEAST

NCHS students, faculty, and staff, you are invited to join the NCHS Thanksgiving Feast on Tuesday, 11/22/22. Meghan and Stacy have been busy preparing this feast with the STAR of the show: THE TURKEY.

How many TURKEYS does it take to feed NCHS you wonder. The answer is 25. Here are some of the lucky birds hanging out in the deep freezer.

The first step of preparation is to thaw the TURKEYS, which takes 5-6 days for one bird.

"Showing gratitude is one of the simplest most powerful things humans can do for each other."

~ Randy Pausch, author of The Last Lecture

Once they are roasted, the TURKEYS have to rest.

Finally, the birds are carved up by Stacy and Meghan, who was lucky enough to find the wishbone.

Welcome, Paule Caride-Rodriguez, to NCHS

NCHS, give a big welcome to our newest foreign exchange student, Paule Caride Rodriguez! Paule decided to become a foreign exchange student because she has done it for short periods of time before and has always loved it. She stated that she wanted to experience the American life that is portrayed in movies, and the reality sort of lives up to it. One of the biggest cultural differences between Spain and America is the food, the hours we eat, and the education system. One of the major differences between the school systems is the grading system because in Spain they do not collect assignments for grades and there are fewer exams and tests. Also, she finds that the difficulty of classes is higher in Spain. Some of her favorite things about the USA are how many activities and sports are offered from the school, the school spirit, and the pride or respect people have for the country. That is all for now as far as an introduction, but I am sure that we will learn more about Paule Caride Rodriguez in the future! Please reach out and introduce yourself and say "Hi."

Welcome, Mr. Shaun Renth, to NCHS

Mr. Shaun Renth transferred to NCHS from TSJ in Nashville, Illinois. After the first quarter of the school year, he has realized what a kind and caring staff works here and what amazing kids attend NCHS. As the year continues, he is looking forward to meeting all of the kids he has not already met. Mr. Renth is the athletic director and 4th and 5th hour P.E. teacher. He also coaches softball here at NCHS and has been coaching since 1995.

In Mr. Renth's free time he likes spending time with his daughter and watching the movie Hoosiers. His favorite holiday is Thanksgiving while his favorite foods are bratwursts, mashed potatoes, and rolls. Mr. Renth describes himself as very flexible with his schedule, loyal, and determined.

Mr. Renth graduated from NCHS in 1995 and went to high school with six other teachers who currently teach at NCHS. Mr. Renth is looking forward to watching all sports, especially track this year, since he has not been able to since he coaches softball. He came to work here because he loves the environment and NCHS has always been his “dream job.”

Welcome, Mr. Stote Reeder, to NCHS

This year NCHS has experienced some staff changes, including the ADDITION of Mr. Stote Reeder. He teaches Algebra 1B, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 college prep. He also is our new head boys basketball coach. Some of the things he has said about our boys this year is that he loves all of them; they have gone beyond his expectations and that he has been “blown away” with them. Mr. Reeder shared that math is very important indicating that “this is the position that pays my bills” and he takes his math/teaching career very seriously. Just like any other human, he still continues to learn and get better even though he only has nine years left (including this year), making his teaching career twenty-five years long now. In his previous teaching experience, Mr. Reeder taught at Sullivan High School, working both as a math teacher and basketball & baseball coach (1997-2000). Sullivan High was the school he grew up in as a teen. Additionally, from 2000-2004 he taught at Flanagan High School as a teacher and basketball and football coach. His last seventeen years he taught at Jersey Community High School as a math teacher, basketball coach, and girls tennis and golf coach. As a high schooler himself, he played basketball, football, baseball and was involved in National Honor Society and the band. He got his Bachelors in Math and Masters in Kinesiology (which is sports management) while playing college basketball at Eureka College. While there, his team won the 1994 NAIA National Championship, and he was inducted into the EC Hall of Fame in 2007. Based on these credentials, I would have good faith for our boys this year.

Mr. Reeder says that he “never worked for a staff or students that loved their school more - it's refreshing to be involved in something that has love from top to bottom.” Not to call out any other schools, but Mr. Reeder did have schools where students could barely cheer for their team on the floor like we do and the big student sections were a new thing to Mr. Reeder when he came to a home game. This atmosphere he said “is more comfortable” than others he has taught at.

~ Photo and article by Becca Shopinski, '23

Mr. Reeder has been married for seventeen years to his wife Dawn, and they have three children. His whole family packed up and moved from the only home they have known to come to NCHS and has said that they are “in this thing together.” Mr. Reeder has parents like we do when it comes to games, and he has warned us that they will be there being loud and proud. In his spare time, he loves to hang out with his family and play golf.

Welcome, Mrs. Lindsay O'Rear, to NCHS

Everyone meet Mrs. O’Rear! It was a pleasure to talk to her and get to know a little bit more about her. She is an NCHS graduate and taught at Wesclin High School before coming to Nashville. She loves spending time with her family, as well as reading, and watching Hallmark movies. When I asked her what her first impressions were after teaching here, she said “I love it! The kids are super eager to learn and the faculty and teachers are very helpful and supportive and it's just such a positive atmosphere!” She is looking forward to getting to know more students and seeing them get involved with various activities here at NCHS! If you haven’t said hello to Mrs. O’Rear yet, make sure you give her a warm welcome!

NCHS Students, What Does YOUR Leadership Look Like?

This week on Wednesday and Thursday, October 12 and 13, 2022, the NCHS teachers are hosting parents and guardians of NCHS students in their fall Parent / Teacher Conferences. The teachers know that "communication is the real work of leadership*" and they have been busy preparing for these conferences.

INQUIRING minds want to know how you, NCHS STUDENTS, are displaying leadership in regards to your education:

What are you doing, NCHS students, to prepare for these upcoming conversations? Have you asked your parents / guardians if they are responding to any teacher invitations? Have you requested your parents / guardians to sign up for a conference (they can do that without an invitation)? Have you discussed your approach to completing coursework with your favorite grown ups in your home? Have you shared with them what your classroom attitude is for your teachers?

* quote attributed to Nitin Noriah, Dean of Harvard Business School

Looking For Something Fun To Do?

St. Paul United Church of Christ is sponsoring a Chili Cook Off on the NCHS Campus in the North Parking Lot (that's by the football field) BEFORE the SENIOR NIGHT Varsity Football Game.

Students can get enter the Cook Off grounds for just $1 and can taste up to 8 - 10 different chilis for that $1. That's a steal, NCHS students, AND all proceeds raised go back to the community high school youth so essentially you are getting your $1 back.

It's a WIN-WIN.

SO grab your BESTIES or come out by yourself and find some other CHILI-LOVING PEOPLE and join in the FUN.

Remember you don't have school on Friday, October 14th so don't eat too much while hanging out at home so you can come HUNGRY.

SMILE...You're On Camera (or you might be soon)

The 2022 - 2023 Yearbook Crew has been busy already this school year with promoting Homecoming and designing the marquee layouts. Know that this crew is ALWAYS looking for the opportunity to take a great photo of NCHS students, faculty, and staff.

When you see them, arm yourself with a smile and "SAY CHEESE!"

Two NCHS Golfers Are State Bound

Freshman Brynn Stiegman is accomplishing GREAT things as an NCHS golfer. Winning Conference as an individual her freshman year is quite a feat, but that isn't enough for Brynn who also qualified as an individual for IHSA Golf State. At Sectionals, Brynn competed in a playoff hole with three other golfers to advance. She travels to Decatur for the IHSA Class 1A State Tournament at Red Tail Run Golf Course on October 7 - 8. She tees off at 10:00 a.m.

Photo Credit: Coach Kell and Coach Guest // Image Credit: Google Images

Junior Parker Renken clinched himself an individual spot at the IHSA Golf State Tournament at the Sectional Match. Parker shared his thoughts about the team's and his individual season: "We had a good year as a team. We had our ups and downs, but had a lot of fun and made a lot of memories throughout the golf season. A couple of my goals this year were to win Conference and make it to the State Tournament. Next year I hope to win the conference title back and make it as far as we can in the postseason." Coach Guest shared that Parker earned 6th place at the sectional with a 5 over 77. He travels to Bloomington for the IHSA Class 1A State Tournament at Prairie Vista Golf Course on October 7 - 8. He tees off at 10:45 a.m.

NCHS Teachers and Administration Are Willing to "Learn To Do the HARD Better"

Ah...a BEST Day...an opportunity to sleep in, grab breakfast with your besties, or finish up that last bit of homework. Well, at least for the students that is. NCHS teachers and administrators have different plans on BEST day, and that is to utilize that time to become better at their craft. Today's focus amongst other things was recognizing strengths and weakness as team members.

Teachers and administrators were tasked with building the tallest free standing tower with the marshmallow on the top in only 18 minutes. Items for use included one marshmallow, 20 uncooked spaghetti noodles, a piece of string, and a measured length of masking tape.

Look at the concentration on these faces...well, almost all the faces. Mr. O'Rear?!?

These structural minds were everyone's FAVORITE to win.

And the WINNING TEAM is.....(INSERT DRUM ROLL)....

Mr. Renth, Mrs. O'Rear, Mrs. Robinson, and Mrs. Williamson

ACTIVITY TAKEAWAY

Always focus on building a solid foundation before thinking of the end product.

NCHS Students, how you can apply that takeaway to your education? Are you building that base knowledge in math by memorizing and applying basic principles that Mr. Reeder is covering? Are you improving your vocabulary in science by committing to memory Greek and Latin base words that Mr. O'Rear is assigning? Are you applying the principles of art to your designs in Mrs. Schultz's class? REMEMBER...start with the solid foundation and build from there. Success is much more attainable.

"We've got this, TEAM!!"

Some people...ahem, Mrs. Kollbaum...were just here for moral support and for passing out the tape.

Everyone clearly has a job at this table...well done, TEAM.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...one team seems to have misinterpreted "free standing" from the directions?

Surprise NCHS Guest Visits Classrooms on GAME DAY

Friday, September 2, 2022 is GAME DAY, and a surprise guest stopped by a few classrooms to spread some school spirit.

QUESTION: Does our NCHS Hornet have a name? FOLLOW UP QUESTION: Maybe this is something we should vote on? Start thinking about where you stand on this school issue and talk with the Student Council Representatives shared below. This seems like a big deal if our Hornet doesn't have a name, right?!?! For now, let's just use the name "Melissa."

Surprise classroom visitors must have permission, so "Melissa, the Hornet" made certain to have Mr. Turner and Mr. Begando ask permission from the teachers before entering the classrooms. Good thinking, "Melissa, the Hornet."

...what positive active learning...

...looks like in NCHS classrooms.

Preparation continued amongst the faculty and staff as they worked to be on the first BEST Day to be the BEST that they can be for NCHS students.

...okay...sometimes the teachers take a break from being the BEST and eat lunch...

With a goal of showing how they too are AWESOME HORNET FANS, NCHS Faculty and Staff participated in the Friends of the Hornet Football Punt, Pass, and Kick Competition on Saturday, August 20, 2022 to support the fundraising efforts of the Hornet Football Team.

The Faculty and Staff made the event into a little "friendly" team competition....

...and the winners were rightfully quite proud of their team accomplishment...

...while others weren't quite certain what happened...
