THE BOOK NOOK

Remember how much fun the Scholastic Book Fair was?! Not only for all the awesome books, but for all the junk your parents loved you spending their hard-earned money on? Like all the useless scented erasers and pen bracelets, to name a few. Well that's the kind of fun we're hoping to bring with our cute little store called The Book Nook! We hope to have the store up every day in the Media Center until the end of school. Each season will bring some new items. Currently, we have some cute Christmas ornaments for sale, as well as your regular pencils, erasers, calendars and such.

FFA Recognized at National Convention

The National FFA Organization recently recognized the Nashville FFA Chapter as a three-star winner in the National FFA Chapter Award program. A three-star winner indicates that the Nashville FFA Chapter is a chapter with an excellent standing within the National FFA Organization out of 8,995 FFA chapters in the nation.

Each activity FFA members attend provides opportunities for them to excel in one of three areas –growing members, building communities or strengthening agriculture. Every year, FFA chapters are recognized as having earned a one, two, or three-star rating on their application. Congratulations, NCHS FFA!

In an organization of 850,823 members, the opportunity to compete at the National level is something that is only a dream to many FFA members. Four members of the Nashville FFA Chapter did just that October 25 - 28 when they competed in the National Floriculture Career Development Event.

In the National FFA Floriculture CDE, FFA members test their knowledge and skills in the production and retailing of flowers, plants and foliage. Participants must complete a general knowledge exam on the floriculture industry, identify plant materials, demonstrate problem solving and decision-making skills, employment and customer service skills, technical floral skills and the ability to work as a team.

In individual competition, Garrett Williamson earned Gold Emblem status and Malayna Bock, Brooklyne Luessenheide, and Eric Wisely were awarded Silver Emblem status.

FFA attends Greenhand and Officer Workshops at SIUC

Leadership skills can be learned and modeled anywhere. That's a valuable lesson learned on September 6 by both Greenhands and the current FFA Officer team. Greenhands and current FFA Officers attended separate, but equally important workshops where they learned about communications, teamwork, and how they can bring those skills back to their chapter. They also participated in leadership activities which they did in a group with Greenhands and Officers from other FFA chapters across Southern Illinois.

...And Action...

Drama Club kicked off the 2022 - 2023 year with a Meet and Greet on September 7, 2022. The members performed skits. Lia Bulger explained: "We had to draw a random character prompt from a hat, one of them being a “gothic cowboy” or “a person in slow motion.” We had to pretend to attend a party as the character we were assigned until someone guessed all the characters in the scene correctly." As the skits were being performed, laughter was heard all throughout the cafeteria.

The Farmyard Follies Tradition Continues

The DuQuoin State Fair is a popular attraction in general, but for FFA students, it is an unofficial kick off to their time together as a new group. Farmyard Follies throws students into fun, yet valuable, team activities that challenges their communication skills and abilities to work together.

This is a true test of good communication skills: guiding a blindfolded golf cart driver.

Moral support is definitely needed when you're trying to win at tug-of-war.
