Bella Bennett, Holiday World, 2022, acrylic paint

Feature Artist: Bella Bennett

This week's artist was inspired by the Art 3 unit on Edward Hopper. Hopper was a realist, and occasional surrealist, painter in the 20th Century. This painting has a mixture of both. Bella started the work titled Holiday World with a sketch of a photo. Then came the fun of experimenting with mixing paint to get the colors right. Bella shared that, like Hopper's work, "this artwork utilizes highlights and shadows. I also incorporated a bit of surrealism." The most challenging part, according to Bella, was "perfecting details, including fine details. It took a lot of time, including class time and at home time. I had to restart some parts, but the final product was worth it."

Edward Hopper's work challenged the viewer with what appeared to be an air of mystery about his subjects. Bella found that to be the best part of this creation. "I enjoy the feeling of mystery incorporated in my artwork. There is a sense of oddity and strangeness."

"No amount of skillful invention can replace the essential element of imagination."
