The rehabilitation of the Nabalintungan River Sub-Watershed is currently underway as part of the implementation of UC-EC Plan 11. This sub-watershed, a critical tributary of the Pulangi River located in the Municipality of Maramag, Bukidnon, has been identified as a priority area for rehabilitation under the existing Memorandum of Agreement between the National Power Corporation (NPC) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
Recognized in the Watershed Master Plan as the top priority area, this sub-watershed has been the focus of immediate intervention due to several pressing environmental threats. These include intensive land conversion from timberland to agriculture, encroachment by large-scale commercial plantations (e.g., banana and pineapple), and increasing rates of soil erosion—all of which directly compromise the reservoir’s water-holding capacity, contribute to downstream flooding, degrade natural vegetation, and elevate pollution levels.
The identified and ongoing projects under this petition are the outcome of extensive community consultation efforts, including participation in barangay and council sessions with Indigenous Peoples (IP) representatives from the two barangays within the watershed area. Inputs from these engagements were carefully considered, and most suggestions have been integrated into the planning and implementation of current interventions. Items that could not be accommodated due to budgetary constraints or prioritization protocols are slated for inclusion in future petitions.
The ongoing activities and programs are specifically tailored to address the immediate and long-term needs of the watershed and are expected to contribute significantly to its ecological restoration and sustainable management.
