Job Shadowing

Job shadowing is an invaluable learning experience that involves spending time following a professional as they work. By observing the professional performing their daily work routine in their environment, the student shall gain a deeper understanding of that particular career and the work culture of the organization. This will allow the student to make an informed decision as to whether or not they wish to pursue this type of career in their future. Students should show a willingness and eagerness to gain knowledge from the job shadowing by questioning and observing when direct participation is not possible.

Job shadowing works best when the student is able to learn about all aspects of the profession in which he or she is observing. The senior team highly recommends that the job shadowing experience be completed at a single site for at least eighty hours.

Students selecting job shadowing projects are responsible for:

  1. Transportation to and from the job shadowing site

  2. Choosing an appropriate on-site advisor that is able to certify all hours worked

  3. Scheduling the actual verifiable hours spent at the job shadowing

  4. Documenting the work completed during the hours spent at the job shadowing site on the verification form

  5. Demonstrating what was actually learned via the job shadowing

  6. Following the conduct and dress requirement standards set forth by the company’s policy

  7. Completing the written and presentation components of the project
