Advisors

“One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say."

-Bryant McGill

Students will have two or more advisors while completing project requirements. Each student will be assigned one of the Senior Seminar faculty as a primary advisor; in addition, an on-site advisor who is an expert in the field is required. Individual projects and topics will dictate the number of advisors needed. Advisors will consult with each other as well as with the student to ensure systematic and timely progress on the project.

Advisors are instructed to be non-directive. Students will be encouraged to explore project possibilities independently and will be expected to establish and meet personal timelines. Advisors, therefore, are present for guidance and support.

In order to ensure adequate communication and to establish a network of support, students will be required to complete a Signature Sheet, Project Confirmation Email, and document hours spent with the on-site advisor on a Verification Form. The Signature Sheet signed by all advisors involved, the senior student, and the student’s parents must be submitted to the primary advisor. No work should be done on the project until the signature of the Senior Seminar faculty (primary) advisor is obtained, the Project Confirmation Email has been received and approved by the primary advisor, and an Official Notice of Project Approval has been received by the student. The date on the Official Notification Certificate is when students may begin counting project hours.

On-site advisors will be consulted during the project and their feedback will be considered in the grading process.

Project Confirmation

Once you have received word from your Primary Advisor that your project has been approved, you need to do the following:

  • Make any changes to your Proposal that your Primary Advisor indicated and have the revisions approved by your Primary Advisor

  • E-mail your On-Site Advisor(s) an updated copy of your Project Proposal as an attachment. In that e-mail you must “carbon copy” your Senior Seminar Primary Advisor and a custodial parent(s). The purpose in doing this is two-fold:

    • To make certain that your parents and On-site Advisor is completely aware of the requirements of your project, and

    • To allow your Primary Advisor to “bookmark” the OSA and the parent's e-mail address for communication purposes. Upon receipt, your Primary Advisor will communicate with all parties involved about the senior project in general, and also to verify their participation in your project.

Traditional Start, April Present Students: The date of your e-mail to your On-Site Advisor, Primary Advisor, and parents with your Proposal attachment will be the formal date of your Project’s approval. You will receive an Official Notification Certificate from your Primary Advisor indicating the date of your project approval. The date of this e-mail, unless prior arrangements have been made, is the date that you may begin on your journey of your Senior Seminar Project and documenting the hours needed for successful completion.

Summer Institute and Summer Start Students: Your project approval date and the day you may begin documenting hours needed for successful completion of your project will be the day after graduation prior to your senior year.

The Senior Team has given you a suggested written script below for you to use for your e-mail communication with your OSA. You may use it, or paraphrase it; however, it must contain all of the information indicated below.
