Week of October 12:
This week in Honors Math, we continued our unit on operations with fractions. We built upon our knowledge of fraction multiplication, moving from visual models that helped us conceptually understand the operation to learning and applying the algorithm. We even upped the complexity by incorporating mixed numbers!
Later in the week, we transitioned into fraction division, using models once again to demonstrate the concept before introducing the "Keep, Change, Flip" strategy. We challenged ourselves further by solving division problems with mixed numbers as well. Next week, we will put all our fraction operations to the test by solving multi-step equations that combine addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division while applying the correct order of operations!
Week of October 5th:
It has been an exciting and mathematically rich week in Honors Math! Mathematicians took a significant step forward as we transitioned from our fifth-grade Big Ideas Math curriculum into sixth-grade content. Together, we explored the connection between division and fractions. Additionally, we worked hard to build a strong conceptual foundation for multiplying fractions by using a variety of visual models to illustrate out thinking and problem-solving.
I hope you all enjoy a wonderful, relaxing long weekend! I am very much looking forward to connecting with you during our parent-teacher conferences on Thursday and Friday. As a reminder, all conferences will take place virtually via Google Meets. You can access your specific meeting link directly through the Parent Teacher Conference Wizard (PTC).
Week of September 28th:
What an active week we had in class! We kicked things off by putting our decimal division skills to work in real-world scenarios through our Chapter 7 performance task. Afterward, the students focused on reviewing key concepts to prepare for our unit test. We closed out the week by launching our new unit on fractions, where we started exploring the close relationship between fractions and division.
As a quick reminder, Outdoor Education is taking place this coming Monday! Please ensure your student is prepared for a great day outdoors.
Week of September 21st:
This week in Honors Math, we continued to deepen our understanding of decimal division. We built carefully on each lesson, progressing from dividing decimals by whole numbers to tackling decimal division with decimals. We constructed models before applying our skills with multiplying by powers of ten, allowing us to set up and solve division problems confidently on paper. We even took on trickier challenges that required placing extra zeros in the dividend to complete the division accurately.
To bring these mathematical concepts to life, we extended our learning by analyzing unit prices to discover the better deal on bulk items at the grocery store. Please note that our Chapter 7 test is scheduled for next Wednesday.
Week of September 14th:
We had a fantastic week in Honors Math as we officially dove into Chapter 7 to master dividing with decimals, our final fifth-grade math standard of the school year! The students did a wonderful job identifying patterns between decimal division and multiplication, building a strong conceptual foundation right out of the gate. So far, we have tackled dividing decimals by whole numbers, and next week we will build on this skill by learning how to divide decimals by decimals.
We will bring these mathematical concepts to life, next week with real-world scenarios by analyzing bulk item pricing to determine which options offer the best overall deal. This will give students an exciting sneak peek into unit rates (a concept they will explore further in a few weeks) and spark a lively classroom debate over whether shopping at bulk stores like Costco really yields the best savings!
Week of September 7th:
This week in Honors Math, we wrapped up Chapter 5 on decimal multiplication. We spent dedicated time ensuring we felt confident multiplying decimals by powers of ten, estimating answers efficiently, and using visual models to conceptualize the math.
To bring these skills to life, students put their learning into action with a hands-on smoothie challenge. They calculated ingredient costs for their products and determined their profits, showing off mathematical precision. We all agreed how fun it would be to actually make smoothies! All of that preparation paid off on Thursday during our Chapter 5 assessment, where the students absolutely knocked it out of the park. I could not be prouder of their hard work and dedication throughout this entire unit.
On Friday, we officially kicked off Chapter 7, which covers our final fifth-grade standard: division of decimals. We began by exploring how the patterns for multiplying and dividing decimals by powers of ten directly connect to one another. It was a fantastic week of growth, and I look forward to keeping this momentum going as we dive deeper into decimal division next week.
Week of August 31st:
This week in Honors Math, mathematicians continued exploring the world of decimals as we began wrapping up Big Ideas Math Chapter 5. We spent time investigating how visual models can help us conceptualize multiplying decimals by both whole numbers and other decimals. Throughout our lessons, we placed a heavy emphasis on estimating first—a crucial step that helps students verify whether their final decimal point placement makes sense.
We capped off the week by putting our skills to work with real-world money problems, which required students to manage multiple steps and bring back their decimal addition and subtraction strategies. On Friday, everyone tackled the chapter’s Performance Task, combining all of their knowledge from Chapter 5 to solve comprehensive, scenario-based word problems. It was wonderful to see their critical thinking on display! The Chapter 5 test will be Thursday of next week.
Enjoy a safe and relaxing Labor Day weekend with your families!
Week of August 24th:
What an energetic and productive week we have had in Honors Math! We truly hit the ground running as we settled into our daily mathematics routines and took on some challenging new concepts. Our main focus this week was building a deep understanding of decimal multiplication. Students practiced multiplying decimals by whole numbers as well as multiplying decimals by decimals. Rather than relying solely on standard steps, we placed heavy emphasis on using visual models to show why these math procedures work.
On Thursday, students took a quick quiz to check their understanding of the concepts we have covered so far. I am thrilled to share that they did amazingly well across the board, and I could not be prouder of their focus and dedication! These quizzes went home on Friday.
To bring these decimal skills to life, students were assigned their very first project on Friday: Planning a Vacation. Each student received a budget and must make thoughtful choices regarding their hotel accommodations, entertainment activities, and travel arrangements from the given choices. Completing this budget requires them to apply all four operations with decimals in a practical, real-world context. This project is due next week on Wednesday. Please feel free to ask your child about the destination they are planning for and how they are managing their budget!
Week of August 17th:
We had a fantastic, fast-paced week in Honors Math as we kicked off our first unit on operations with decimals, which is one of the final two 5th-grade standards we will cover this year. We are settling into our daily routines beautifully and hard at work.
This week, we first observed patterns in how the decimal point shifts when multiplying by powers of ten. We then built on prior knowledge of rounding to estimate products, a skill that will be crucial next week as we check that our final calculations are reasonable. Finally, we began exploring visual models to better understand the concept of multiplying decimals. Quick Reminder: Homework will be sent home most nights to reinforce our daily lessons and should take roughly 15 minutes to complete.
Week of August 13th:
Welcome to a new school year! It was great to get started this week, and I am thrilled to work with your students.
On Thursday, students spent time in their homerooms learning the ins and outs of Washington. On Friday, Honors Math officially met for the first time! We spent our time together establishing class routines and reviewing the units we will cover this year. We also watched a short video on brain science, discussing how practice builds strong neural connections. Students made great connections between these ideas and our math journey ahead, laying the foundation for challenging tasks, flexible thinking, and patience as we learn new concepts. Next week, we are excited to dive into our first unit on decimal operations.
