3 steps to conjugate a verb:


  1. Find the stem/root of the verb by taking off the -ar, -er, or -ir off of the infinitive.

3. Attach the new ending to the stem of the verb.

  1. How do I know which type of ending I should add on to the stem?

If you take an -ar off of the infinitive when finding the stem, add an -ar ending

If you take an -er off of the infinitive when finding the stem, add an -er ending

If you take an -ir off of the infinitive when finding the stem, add an -ir ending


  1. How do I know which verbs are regular?

You will basically know which verbs are regular by knowing that they don't belong to an irregular group. Rude answer, right?

If you aren't well versed in irregular verbs, here is a condensed list of common REGULAR VERBS.


  1. How can I remember where the accent goes on the "vosotros" form?

The accent always goes on the vowel immediately following the stem. This also coincides with the type of verb it is:

If you took an -ar off, the accent is on the a.

If you took an -er off, the accent is on the e.

If you took an -ir off, the accent is on the i.


  1. Do I need to know the "vosotros" form?!

Yes and no. I will expect you to know how to form it when we are practicing in class, but it will never be on a formative or summative assessment!


  1. Is there an easy way to remember these endings?

Yes! Instead of trying to memorize 18 things, just memorize 8!

  1. Memorize the -ar endings (o, as, a, amos, áis, an)

  2. When conjugating an -er verb, just switch the a's in the -ar endings to e's

  3. When conjugating an -ir verb, just switch the e's from the -er conjugations in the nosotros and vosotros forms to i's
