-car, -gar, -zar

[preterite indicative]

Basic info:

In the preterite tense, infinitives that end in -car, -gar and -zar are irregular, but only in the "yo" form.

  • No other conjugations/forms will have this irregularity (i.e. the other verb forms are normal)

The purpose of the new ending in the "yo" form is to maintain the sound of the infinitive.

  • We want verbs with infinitives that end in -car to still make a hard "k" sound

  • We want verbs with infinitives that end in -gar to still make a hard "g" sound

  • We want verbs with infinitives that end in -zar to still make a "s" sound
