Mathematics is one of the eight subject groups of the IB Middle Years Programme. Milwee offers several math pathways so every student can be challenged at the right level, from grade-level courses to high school Algebra 1 and Geometry.
Milwee recommends each student's next math course based on their FAST Math PM3 score, the end-of-year state assessment from the grade they just completed. Seminole County is a parent choice district, so final course decisions are always made together with families. Talk with your student's school counselor about which course is the best fit.

Unlike Sciences and Individuals and Societies, where every student takes Advanced courses, math and Language and Literature are offered at more than one level. Math builds skill on skill, and the course a student takes in middle school determines which math courses they can take in high school. Offering several pathways lets each student move at a pace that builds a strong foundation.
Students build fluency with fractions, decimals, and percentages, and use ratios and rates to solve problems. They write, solve, and graph equations and inequalities, find the area of complex shapes and the volume of rectangular prisms, and use statistics to describe and compare data sets.
Grade 6 | Year | Course code 1205010
Leads to: 7th Grade Mathematics or 7th Grade Accelerated Mathematics
Students cover all of the 6th grade standards plus some of the 7th grade standards. Beyond the 6th grade topics, they use proportions to solve percent problems, find the surface area and volume of three-dimensional shapes, work with negative numbers and other rational numbers, and graph points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane.
Grade 6 | Year | Recommended for students scoring 3 or higher on the 5th grade FAST | Course code 1205020
Leads to: 7th Grade Accelerated Mathematics
RAMP6 is the first step in Seminole County's most accelerated math pathway. In 6th grade, RAMP6 students take the Grade 7 Accelerated course, covering about half of the 7th grade standards and all of the 8th grade standards. Students who are proficient go on to Algebra 1 Honors in 7th grade and Geometry Honors in 8th grade, then take four more advanced math courses in high school. Families who want a less intense pace can choose 6th Grade Accelerated instead; those students take 7th Grade Accelerated in 7th grade and Algebra 1 Honors in 8th grade.
Grade 6 | Year | Prerequisite: RAMP5 | Course code 1205050G
Leads to: Algebra 1 Honors in 7th grade
Students work with negative numbers and other rational numbers, solve linear equations, and use proportions and similarity to solve problems. They find the surface area and volume of three-dimensional shapes, explore transformations on the coordinate plane, convert between customary and metric units, analyze data with histograms and other graphs, and calculate probabilities.
Grade 7 | Year | Course code 1205040
Leads to: 8th Grade Pre-Algebra or Algebra 1 Honors
Students cover the 7th and 8th grade standards in one year, preparing them for Algebra 1 Honors in 8th grade. Along with the core 7th grade topics, they analyze and graph linear functions, solve systems of equations, and use distance and angle relationships to analyze two- and three-dimensional figures.
Grade 7 | Year | Recommended for students completing 6th Grade Accelerated or scoring 3 or higher on the 6th grade FAST | Course code 1205050
Leads to: Algebra 1 Honors or 8th Grade Pre-Algebra
Students build the foundation for high school Algebra 1. They analyze and graph linear functions, solve equations, inequalities, and systems of equations, use distance and angle relationships in geometry, and analyze data with scatter plots and lines of best fit, all through multistep, real-world problems.
Grade 8 | Year | Course code 1205070
Leads to: Algebra 1 in high school
A rigorous, in-depth study of Algebra 1, including linear, absolute value, and rational equations and inequalities, and the characteristics of quadratic functions and their graphs. Students take the Florida Algebra 1 End-of-Course exam (see below).
Grade 7 (RAMP pathway) or Grade 8 | Year | 1.0 high school credit | Course code 1200320
Leads to: Geometry Honors
A rigorous, in-depth study of geometry and its real-world applications, including logic and proof, coordinate geometry, circles, vectors, and cross sections of three-dimensional figures. Students take the Florida Geometry End-of-Course exam (see below).
Grade 8 | Year | Prerequisite: Algebra 1 Honors | 1.0 high school credit | Course code 1206320
Algebra 1 Honors and Geometry Honors each earn one high school credit, and final grades become part of your student's high school transcript. Students in each course take the Florida End-of-Course (EOC) exam in the spring, and the exam counts for 30 percent of the course grade. Passing the Algebra 1 EOC is required for a standard high school diploma in Florida. Algebra 1 or its equivalent is required for high school graduation.
Milwee offers online and in-person support so every student can find the help and practice they need.
After-school tutorial. Milwee math teachers offer free after-school tutorial in all areas of math, open to every Milwee student, with homework help and targeted practice. Additional information about this year's tutorial support can be found here.
Online resources.
IXL: Standards-aligned practice with instant feedback and personalized recommendations for what to work on next.
Math Nation: Video lessons, a Test Yourself tool that checks understanding and points students to the right resources, and a discussion wall where students can ask and answer questions anytime.
Khan Academy: Free video tutorials and practice for every math topic. Teachers can assign videos and practice, and students can use it anytime they're stuck on a concept.
Intensive Math. Students who score Level 1 or 2 on the FAST Math assessment receive additional math instruction through our Intervention Homerooms on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Moving up a level. Students who move from a standard course to an accelerated course receive additional support to help them make the transition.
Yes. Students who score 3 or higher on the FAST Math PM3 are recommended for the accelerated course the next year, and they receive additional support during the transition.
Families of rising 6th graders can choose 6th Grade Accelerated instead of RAMP6. Those students take 7th Grade Accelerated in 7th grade and Algebra 1 Honors in 8th grade.
No. Students who take 8th Grade Pre-Algebra take Algebra 1 in high school.
