Our district-wide Language Arts curriculum is Benchmark Advance. We will supplement our program with additional novels, guided reading groups, picture books and independent reading activities. This year, we will focus on using our comprehension and analysis of fiction and nonfiction texts, fluency, vocabulary, author's purpose and craft to become more skilled writers. In addition to these skills, students will have regular grammar and spelling instruction and will be introduced to cursive writing.

I am thrilled about our recently adopted science curriculum that does a fabulous job addressing the Next Generation Science Standards. I had the opportunity to pilot the curriculum and continue to be blown away with the quality content of this program.
This year we have four main including Patterns of the Earth and Sky, Modeling Matter, Earth Systems, and finally Ecosystem Restoration. As a massive science lover, I cannot wait to dive into these NGSS standards!
Also, 5th graders will have the opportunity to attend the amazing Trabuco Field Study field trip later in the school year! We are so lucky to have the opportunity to participate in this field trip program.
Our Social Studies curriculum, myWORLD focuses on American history. Chapters of study include The First Americans, The Age of Exploration, Settling the Colonies in North America, The American Revolution, A New Nation, Life in a New Republic, and Westward Expansion.
We are working to provide enrichment activities and potential field trips to support our learning.
We will continue using Second Step, a wonderful program designed to engage students in the social-emotional learning that is so very important during times such as these. The Second Step curriculum is designed to help students learn, practice empathy, manage emotions, self regulate, and solve problems.
In addition to the Second Step program, we will also use many of the Digital Culture lessons through commonsensemedia.org to engage students in learning about becoming a digital citizen. I encourage you to visit their website which has great resources for parents.
Q: Where can I check my student's grades/progress?
A: Although assignments are turned in through Google Classroom, I track progress and work completion in our Aeries system. You can log into the Parent Portal to see your students progress. I do my best to update the system each week.
Q: I have a question. How can I contact Mrs. Hansen?
A: Email is the most efficient way to contact me at hansene@svusd.org or through our Class Dojo messaging. I do my best to respond in 24-48 business hours. As a mom of two school age students, I try to reserve evenings as family-time. I appreciate your understanding!
