If books are not easily accessible, please have your students log into Epic!. This fabulous site has thousands of books for your student to enjoy. You can also download the Epic! app or follow the instructions linked here. Our class code will be posted on Google Classroom.
We will have a minimum of three independent reading based projects this year.
I strongly believe in the power of mental rest and kids having time to do more of what they love... spending time with their friends and family after school. Our time in class is meant to be used efficiently and therefore, I do not assign a large amount of homework each week.
When assigned, work at home will be reserved for long-term personal projects (such as independent reading projects, Passion Projects, etc...) as well as work that is not being finished due to off-task behavior in the classroom. Although I have time bookmarked for independent reading in the classroom each day, I always encourage students to read a minimum of 20 minutes at home each day, and to practice their responsibility by helping out at home.
Although the protocols and structures below were created for the purpose of meeting the needs of gifted learners, all students benefit from learning experiences designed in this way. Throughout the year, your students will be developing a greater understanding of these structures and embedding them in their learning activities.
I had the opportunity to attend a three day institute this summer led by the authors of this article. It was absolutely amazing and I am excited to continue to develop lessons that fit into this model. The article provides a strong representation of SVUSD's Gifted and Talented Program goals.
