Las Posadas is a religious festival mostly celebrated in Mexico and some parts of the U.S. This is a 9 day celebration that starts December 16 and ends December 24. Las Posadas celebrates the journey that Joseph and Mary made from Nazareth and Bethlehem in search of a safe place where Mary could give birth to baby Jesus. Posadas include a nativity set, decorations, pinatas, songs, and a party with traditional food.
The outside of houses are decorated with evergreens, moss and paper lanterns. Children are given candles and a board, with a painted clay figure of mary riding on a donkey and Joseph, to process round the streets with.
After the piñata there is dinner. Some traditional foods that are served are tamales ,buñuelos , atole, cafe de olla, pozole, and pan dulce.
