At the end of the year, the incoming sixth graders will be given the opportunity to experience a "mock school day" and meet the teachers of the team. Students will also be given a tour of the school and help navigating their transition to middle school.
By doing this, The Poet's Society team hopes to help build a sense of community for our incoming students.
Incoming sixth graders will be paired with a rising seventh grader to guide them through the transition into middle school. Throughout the spring before their transition, these student pairs will be able to write letters/emails to each other and ask questions/communicate with one another.
This practice will strengthen connections with their peers and help prepare incoming sixth graders for the transition.
This will occur during the last week of school. Teachers will create a "gallery" of eighth grade student work (the independent projects), and refreshments and snacks will be provided. During this, students of all ages (and their families) will be able to celebrate the eighth graders' accomplishments.
It's important that students are given time to celebrate their accomplishments.
Eighth graders will be given time during the second half of the year to focus on a topic of their choice and create a final project to showcase in the end of the year celebration. Students will be given time to work on their projects and time to conference with a team teacher during the school day (at least once a week during the English/History block).
By doing this project, students will be given time to develop their own agency and critical thinking.
