Communication: Designing effective forms of communications (both school-to-home and home-to-school) about programs and progress
Volunteering: Recruiting and organizing parental help and support, both in and out of the classroom
Collaborating with Community: Identifying and integrating resources and services from the community into our classrooms in order to strengthen programs, family practices, and student learning
Daily communication with parents is integral to strengthening and supporting communities both in and out of the classroom. With this in mind, The Poet's Society team has created a daily poll that both students and guardians can fill out. Though not mandatory, these offer opportunities for both students and their guardians to request more information, give feedback, etc. about the class. This will allow for transparent and honest pathways for interactions between the classroom and home. Our daily polls will be sent out through email, and also updated at the links below.

On top of the daily poll, students and families will be given a weekly newsletter (sent out at the end of each week) that goes over what was covered in class, how families are able to get involved, and what's upcoming in the school year. Families can request a digital or paper copy of the newsletter in the daily poll; this will ensure that families will have access to the same information regardless of technological ownership. If necessary, families can also request a translated version (we will work with community organizations/language teachers to accommodate these requests to the best of our ability).
Our End of the Year Celebration is a chance for our 8th grade students to show off the work they've completed throughout the year and celebrate all their hard work. It allows parents to see what has been happening throughout the year, as well as volunteer in any end of year trips the class might participate in and projects the students may do. The End of the Year Celebration is split into two weekends. The first of which is a student work exhibition; here students can showcase their personal learning projects and any specific school work they are particularly proud of. The second of which is a class trip; this will be to a historical city where students can explore their personal interests beyond the classroom. In both of these instances, parents are able to volunteer and act as group leaders, helpers, and interact with the students.
The Open House we hold at the beginning of the year is crucial for us on The Poet's Society team; it's a great way for us to get to know not only our incoming sixth graders, but also their guardians. We get to know them on a more personal level, their fields of work and qualifications, and if any of them want to come in and volunteer in the class for a specific unit. Not only are we looking for guardian volunteers, but we also look to see if anyone knows of any community organizations that would be interested in helping out during specific units; this often comes in the form of field trips, guest speakers, etc. In The Poet's Society team, we look to involve our students in the community often. This is not only for the students to explore the world and find their passions, but also for the community to interact with the students.
