The purpose of the set up in this classroom is to create a space where students feel comfortable to express their opinions and passions. The Semi Socratic Circle allows for both lectures and debates, and the Maker Space gives students the resources they need to complete projects and passions.
The Student Work/Current Event wall allows students to show off their talents and stay informed about the world they exist in.
The main focus for this set up is to have the tables be at the front of the room to allow students to work with one another when directions are being given. Students also have the opportunity to work individually and sit at the desks in the back of the room if they'd prefer. There is a rug set up in the front of the room if the students decide sitting on the floor is the best option for them to follow along as well.
Along with this, Ms. Hendricks has two library sections set up for the students to be able to go back there to do independent reading or working back there. Ms. Hendricks has her desk up in the front of the room so students have the ability to come up to her whenever they need assistance and so she can see if anyone ever needs any help.
The main focus within the classroom is on student desks; these are able to be moved to suit student needs, activities, and learning in the classroom. Students will be able to work collaboratively, individually, and democratically with each other and the teacher in order to build important skills for the 21st century.
On top of this, Ms. Chack has also created a corner in which students can work, read, or decompress during class. It's important that students are given the opportunity to advocate for themselves, either in their academics or their wellbeing, while in class.
