What is the English Learner Program?
The goal of the English Learner Program is to provide high-quality instruction in the English language domains of listening, reading, speaking, and writing. We strive to provide appropriate modifications and accommodations in the mainstream classroom so that the English Learners may develop the English skills necessary to successfully achieve both academically and socially.
Who is eligible to be an English Learner?
Students enrolled in grades K-12 in an English-speaking elementary or secondary school;
not born in the US or has a native language other than English; and
have difficulties in reading, speaking, writing, or understanding the English language

Students meeting the above criteria are screened for English proficiency to determine if they will qualify as an EL.
How are English Learners (ELs) Identified?
Students cannot be denied enrollment based on lack of documentation or visa status.
During the enrollment process, parents complete a home language survey in their native language. If a language other than English is indicated, the English Language Proficiency Screener (ELPS) is administered to determine English proficiency.
Students who score Progressing or Emerging on ELPS are identified as an EL.
Students are then placed in the appropriate programs to improve language proficiency.
Students will remain an EL until Proficient is attained on the annual English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT).
