January 2021 Cougar Spotlights

January's Cougar spotlight

We have 2 cougar spotlights for this month´s. Our 1´st Cougar spotlight goes to…. Ms.Burks!!! Mrs. Burks was chosen for this month's cougar spotlight because of her talent. As some of you may know Ms.Burks plays tackle football for the girls team. Something that Ms.Burk got inspired was that this girl went up to her at 711 and asked if she would ever think about playing football.. Ms.Burks didn't really believe in herself, but then she went to go workout with them and told herself “ maybe this is it”. She took up the challenged and started playing. Ms.Burks has been playing tackle football since 2019, she played one season in ( 2019) for the San Diego Surge. Due to covid, season 2020 was cancelled. Ms.Burks is currently training for season 2021, but know she plays for the San Diego Rebellion. Her first game is May 1, go check her out #53!!! In 2019, their first record was 4-2. Ms.Burks' team went to the playoffs, but unfortunately they lost in the first round. An advice that Ms.Burks gives to people who play tackle football or any sport is “ everyday do something to make yourself 1% better. Studying plays, working out, eating a healthy meal....anything to build your machine (your body). You are a piece to a whole team. If you are better, your team is better.”

Our 2nd Cougar spotlight goes to.. Yoselyn!! As many of you may not know, Yoselyn does Taekwondo. Taekwondo is a Korean martial arts. Nothing really inspired her to do Taekwondo but she started Taekwondo when she was only 2 years old, and didn't really know much about it. Yoselyn had been doing Taekwondo for about 14 years now. Yoselyn has had so many tournaments, that she doesn't remember how much she has won. But out of all the tournaments she had, she has only gotten 2nd place once and the rest were 1st place. An Advice that she give to people who do Taekwondo is “ not ever take advantage of people just because you know self defense. Taekwondo is full of discipline and we never start anything we just retaliate. But always push yourself and focus on your goals because you will be able to reach them. “

Mr.Saenz !!!!

November's Cougar Spotlight teacher's edition is ... Mr. Saenz!!!! Mr. Saenz is the 6th-8th grade art teacher. He has worked at Keiller for 10 or 11 years now. Mr.Saenz works on art outside of school. Mr.Saenz sells his artwork in San Diego and Arizona. He has some drawings in Marketplace at Liberty Station in Point Loma. You should go check them out! Mr. Saenz’s favorite paint he likes to work with is oil paint. Mr.Saenz enjoys art because it is satisfying. Things that inspire him to paint were artists and items around him. Mr.Saenz started art since he could remember, he took some art classes in 6th grade. He was first presented with airbrushing, then when he was in college he started to do oil painting (which he prefers).

KLA Student

Eleazar Galan !!!

November's student spotlight goes to 8th grade Eleazar Galan!!! Eleazar has been at Keiller for 3 years. We chose him to be our Daily Cougar spotlight because for November we wanted to go with art, some students would recognize his artwork and that's when we decided we wanted him to be the student spotlight One of Eleazar´s favorite paintings he did was "Asik Asik falls". It is a waterfall that it located in the Philippines. For the paint that he uses, he like the texture of the paint thin and thick. He paints when he has free time and is very patient with his artwork. His inspirations are a lot of things, whether it's something he saw or wanting to try to remake something. His imagination is what usually motivates him to finish the painting. He doesn’t really know when his passion for art started, but he would make small sketches and paintings in elementary. People would comment nice things about his art work!

MESA

Mr. Buddy

This year at KLA, we have a new elective known as MESA. What is MESA, you ask? Well, Mesa is a science and technology course that is taught by Mr. Buddy, the 7th grade science teacher. Mesa stands for Math, Engineering, Science, and Achievement. What is it that you do in MESA? In MESA, students work on challenges like building catapults, marble mazes, and long-term projects like Gravity-Powered Sorting Machines. These projects are done independently or as a group. Mr. Buddy himself enjoys the class because there are always new challenges and problems to solve. A couple of years back, MESA was an after school club that was runned by Mr. Buddy, but less and less students were going, and as the time went by and MESA got older, so did this elective. Luckily, it’s back in full effect and isn’t a club anymore but better yet, an elective once again, like it was many years ago!
