Our Purpose
This site represents the thoughts and craftmanship of the students working within the SCALE (GSO) English department. We will present poetry, short stories, essays, and various literary works that are produced as a part of the coursework. In addition, our students have created examples/forms of expression that represent ideas that they want to express and explore. Our goal is to present the authentic voices of our students refined within the structure of traditional and new forms.

Sasquatch
by E. H.
Bobby and Jim, two brothers from Texas, are in Canada hunting for deer. Bobby and Jim are walking in the woods all alone. The temperature is humid, the weather is cloudy with a bit of fog.
They see squirrels, deer, and occasionally bears. They end up seeing this great big buck with massive antlers. They decide to follow the buck for about 10 minutes or so, as quietly as possible. They end up down by a creek. Jim aims his rifle right at the buck’s torso, and just as he is about to pull the trigger, Bobby steps on a branch and snaps it in half.
He ends up making the deer run off, Bobby and Jim start to chase after the buck for about 30 minutes or so, but they end up losing it. They quickly realized they were in the middle of nowhere; lost. They checked the GPS but noticed it wasn’t working. They look for anything to help them find their way back. Instead, something finds them.
The creature emerges out from behind a 15-foot boulder. It is standing 30 yards from Bobby and Jim. It is hairy and bigger than a bear. The creature comes 15 yards closer and Jim recognizes the creature as the one and only mythical creature known as Sasquatch AKA bigfoot.
Jim instantly turns to Bobby and tells him what the creature is. Bobby and Jim are staring at each other and staring at the sasquatch who is staring right back at them. The next thing they know is that the beast is charging right for them.
Bobby starts to run but realizes Jim is frozen from all the fear inside his body. Bobby quickly grabs Jim by the arm and immediately begins to run away from the sasquatch. They get about 100 yards before quickly becoming aware that the beast is faster than them and it is closing the distance between them.
Bobby decides to make a stand. He turns around and aims his rifle right at the sasquatch’s head, but he is trembling so hard that he ends up missing the shot. Instead, he ends up shooting it in the shoulder and in the process of doing so, he angers it more. The result is that Bobby bought him and his brother some time to get away.
However, it didn’t take the beast long to recover from his injury and begin tracking them down again. Bobby notices the sasquatch coming to finish them off. Bobby and Jim try to run faster, but they can’t because they’re so exhausted.
Bobby quickly decides to send Jim up a tree to hide while he guides the beast away. Bobby starts to run away with the last little bit of energy and strength he has left. Bobby’s plan works; he uses himself as bait to guide the beast away and the Big Foot follows him.
He finds himself cornered and the sasquatch standing at 12 feet tall right in front of him. The creature is covered in brown fur and huge muscles. His pupils are black like any other animal. The blood from the wound has dried into a crusty clump. It is breathing heavy.
The beast grabs Bobby and starts to devour him limb by limb. Bobby screams for his life and begs for Jesus’s intervention. Suddenly the sasquatch lets go of Bobby and the beast just falls over dead. Turns out that Jim has come to rescue his big brother. He shoots the beast in the back of its head with his rifle.
Jim runs over to Bobby’s side, but Jim has shown up too late because Bobby is bleeding out everywhere. The beast has devoured one of his arms.
Jim tells Bobby, “He’s going to be okay,” but Jim knows that he’s not. Bobby uses his left hand to grab Jim’s hand and tells him, “I’m sorry it has to be this way,” then goes on to say, “I will love you always no matter what happens to me,” before drawing his last breath.
Jim starts to cry but realizes Bobby wouldn’t want him to cry. Jim decides to bury his brother’s body instead.
