Our Book Recommendations
We know that one way to learn about great new books to read is through our friends! So we've created these Google Jamboards where students in our class can recommend books after they finish reading something good. Each book recommendation should have the book title and author, the genre, a brief summary (without spoilers), and a rating based on a 5-star scale! We hope you may find out about some new books to add to your own reading list.
How Will We Share Our Thinking in Reading?
I'm so glad you asked! Each week, readers share their thinking about their independent books by writing in their reader's notebook (spiral notebook). The important thing about reader's notebooks is that you are thinking, processing, and tapping into your metacognition while reading! After all, reading is all about making connections, discoveries, and engaging with characters and information in our own ways!
Reader's notebooks (RNBs) are collected every other week (bi-weekly) and are graded for effort, showing reading strategies and thinking in action, neatness, and thoroughness (writing 4 days/nights per week minimum). The collection schedule is shown below. Students are required to write one weekly "Zoom Ins" where they elaborate on a thought they have had throughout the week and they write more about it in a letter to Mrs. Mahar.Â
Our 40-Book Challenge
Genre Tracking Form
Each student will track their books on this genre tracking form. A unique part of the 40-Book Challenge is to be a varied reader! That means we are reading many, many genres! Can you do it? I think you can!
Tracking Forms are collected each trimester to review progress towards meeting the challenge goals!
