OUR TOWN

Facing challenges. Finding Solutions. Fostering Community.

HISTORY OF MYERSTOWN

In the early 1730's, German immigrants settled in the area we now know as Myerstown. The first plantation was owned by Mr. Isaac Meier when he wed the owner's daughter and purchased the family home. The property became known as the Isaac Meier House, and still stands in the Myerstown Community Park today. Meier began plans to construct the town in 1768, and after his untimely death, it became known as Meier-town in tribute to it's pioneer. The town name would later be changed from the German form to the English form, and would affectionately be called Myerstown from that point forward.

HISTORY OF THE MYERSTOWN BOROUGH

The Borough of Myerstown was incorporated in 1912, and held it's very first meeting in the Myerstown High School, which has gone through many changes, but currently is home to the Myerstown Borough offices, the Myerstown Vitality Partnership offices, the Isaac Meier Homestead, Inc., and several local businesses. This beautiful piece of our history carries with it many stories of what was, and inspires hope of what is to come for Myerstown.

Myerstown's roots are ethnically diverse with architecture reminiscent of the early German immigrants that settled in the area, glimpses of the canal and railroad display our Irish heritage, and images of the local quarries unfold our Italian ancestry.

myerstown today

Myerstown still retains its small-town feel, located in a rich farming area, with abundant fresh air, yet within a short drive to major hubs, via one of two major highways running through the town. Myerstown is generally considered a safe community that is surrounded by parks, developments and ample farmland and wooded areas. Myerstown is home to the ELCO school district where students receive an excellent education, have the opportunity to participate in many sporting teams, band, chorus and other extracurricular activities, and receive the tools they need to further their education or enter the work force upon graduation. Myerstown is host to fun festivals and community events like the annual Block Party and Cookies and Photos with Santa, while also offering the quiet and peaceful nature of the country. Business is growing and Myerstown is home to many thriving small businesses, along with several large corporations and industries. Myerstown is quickly becoming an attractive place to plant a new business. With a cooperative local government, incentives to build and remodel existing structures, and support from organizations such as the Myerstown Vitality Partnership, Myerstown has made it desirable to set up shop here in town. With many residents having roots here in Myerstown, there is a strong desire to continue the small town feel by working to deepen the sense of community, and create a downtown where people desire to live, work and play. The Myerstown Vitality Partnership is actively working to achieve these goals and the future is bright for Myerstown, Pa!
