Donate Blood! There is a critical shortage right now!! This counts as 1 hour for this quarter (normally only 30min); if you do Plasma or platelets, you can get 2 hours: https://www.vitalant.org/Home.aspx
Denver Volunteer efforts! This website gives you multiple links to volunteer activities going on right now. https://www.denvergov.org/content/denvergov/en/environmental-health/news/coronavirus-info/donations---volunteering.html
Colorado Coalition for the homeless- Health screenings at the shelters (medical and non-medical volunteers needed, I worked with this organization for the last 2 months doing COVID screenings, we have several DCN grads working for them now too!) https://www.coloradocoalition.org/volunteer?fbclid=IwAR0xwalOiAgDZBFIJ34H6B4LmaDRCSiFRsNBlN9UkR5oQmsGBKNFumX6uBE
United Way- website has multiple in-person and remote opportunities- https://unitedwaydenver.org/volunteer/?matchtype=b&keyword=%2Bvolunteer&gclid=CjwKCAjwnIr1BRAWEiwA6GpwNbX8uDNC7XGciHTGUjEvqTqge_3XOJUz18BI5HF5doiHlQKhL6cuUxoCcNQQAvD_BwE
Denver Rescue Mission: Axillary men's homeless shelters around Denver and Ft. Collins need help with meal service. https://serve.drmvolunteers.org/custom/501/index.php
Catholic Charities: Women's shelters meal service- https://serveccdenver.volunteerhub.com/lp/emer/
Project Cure: Sorting medical donations (in-person) https://projectcure.org/denver
As always, you can volunteer on your own, but it must be volunteering with humans (not animals, unless it is therapy pets); it cannot be things like serving alcohol at an event like Great American Beer Fest volunteering, and it must be with an established named organization (i.e., not babysitting for a friend). It will need to be things I can confirm you participated in, such as a set organization, or email me with other suggestions. I am flexible this term with different ideas!!!
We usually have multiple group activities planned and are getting those dates set up. We have been surveying on Facebook for times that work best for the majority. We still have a smaller # of offerings than usual but are working on expanding that. If you have any you want to share or get others involved, please let me know. I am more than happy to add more if you send them my way. I also try to post events in the community on the Facebook page.
You can always volunteer at locations you are interested in. A website I like to look for events is https://www.sparkthechangecolorado.org/, where you can search for locations and times you are free. Also, any volunteering for SNA can count for GHP too! Don’t forget to bring your form to get signed with you. Found here or attached… http://mydsn.net/GlobalHealth/documents/GHP-Community-Outreach-Journal.pdf
· *Volunteer hours done over the break will count towards next quarter! It is a great way to get them done early!
Volunteer Hours can now roll! If you had more than 6 hours from the last term, we would roll the extra over into this term to help students get their hours completed. This will be done automatically. No need to fill out anything extra.
Internship Applications (Click on "Information, Applications & Forms for details)
Internships ARE BACK!!!! December 2021 is a combined Domestic experience in Denver & The Bahamas!!
Dates are being finalized for the international portion but this will be the first week of December Break between Dec 20th- Dec 26th. Denver dates will be during the Fall break and will be working in community health locally with people experiencing homelessness. I WIll be sending out a separate email with application details (see below if you are wanting to jump on getting your 3 reference forms done now!)
If you have 2 active quarters (or will finish your second quarter by interviews of this term) as a GHP member you can apply if you are in quarters 3, 4, or 5 for the trip to be completed after either your 4, 5, or 6th quarters.
Community & Pediatric Clinical credit (YES you can get clinical credit for this depending on what quarter you are in!).
The DENVER portion will focus on Urban Homeless, Refugees & Inner-city community health. Other sites include but are not limited to Temporary homeless shelter at Denver Colosseum, Denver Rescue Mission (clinic and food service), Senior Support Services(meals & clinical care), Sox Place, Stout Street Shelter. You will be working with high-risk homeless patients and Refugees right here in Denver.
THE BAHAMAS portion- The Bahamas is in a vulnerable environment that is prone to natural disasters. Since Hurricane Dorian’s tragic landfall on nearby Grand Bahamas and Abaco Island, Nassau has experienced an influx of individuals as survivors seek refuge. Since then, the Bahamas became more vulnerable due to the destruction of local infrastructure and homes. This created a lack of access to clean water, toilets, and other resources that increases the community’s risk for diseases. Covid-19 has created further challenges to this. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/sep/13/hurricane-dorian-the-mudd-haitians-inequality
ESTIMATED Cost will be available soon, be aware that flights are very variable right now and this will impact the estimates for cost. Come chat with me if you have questions about this as well as anything else regarding the internship.
