Rhythms in the Tempest: Dancing at the Port
MaxMSP
This composition consists of four main sound elements: Sound 1 provides a drum beat, Sound 2 generates the sound of thunder, Sound 3 simulates the engine troubles of a boat, and Sound 4 represents the dance through sound. The overall theme portrays fishermen dancing at the port in the midst of a storm.
Sound 1: Drum Beat – The fishers play traditional drum instruments to celebrate their craft and heritage as fishermen.
Sound 2: Thunder Sound – It’s a stormy day at the port. Though the thunder sounds harsh, if you listen closely, it creates a rhythm, almost as if the thunder itself is dancing with the fishermen.
Sound 3: Boat Engine Sound – The engine sputters under the force of the storm, sounding broken. It mimics the rhythmic motion of a tube pulling up and down through the seawater. The pump grinds with a creaky, rhythmic noise. But the fishermen aren't concerned with fixing it today – they've worked hard all day, and now it's time to dance. The repairs can wait until tomorrow.
Sound 4: Abstract Sound of the Dance – This section captures the motion of the dance in sound. As the fisherman twists their body in choreography, the tone of the sound shifts accordingly. When the fisherman holds a pose, the sound sustains the same tone for a few seconds.
